Jessie Matthews was born in 1907, one of a large family from the slums of Soho.
She stole the show again as one of an ensemble cast in the classic Friday the Thirteenth but her true forte was found in stylish musical comedies directed by Victor Saville, such as Evergreen (repeating her stage triumph), First A Girl (based on the German film Viktor und Viktoria) and It's Love Again.
Jessie Matthews, the Dancing Divinity, who set the style of a generation and who was a bright and glamorous spark for millions during one of Britain's darkest hours, died at the age of seventy-three after a battle with cancer and was buried in an unmarked grave.

IN 1930, EVELYN Laye divorced her husband, Sonnie Hale, citing his adultery with Jessie Matthews who, at the end of the trial, was subjected to a very scathing condemnation as to her character and morals by the divorce judge.
Jessie felt that it was wrong for a husband to direct his wife even though she agreed to him doing so, and so it turned out.
Jessie now realised that she had to hang up her dancing shoes and take straight acting parts, none the less, when in August 1949 she was offered the opportunity to take over from Zoe Gail in Cecil Landau's revue, Sauce Tartare, she accepted with alacrity.

Jessie Matthews Biography :: Hollywood.com   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
Matthews' second husband was stage comedian and director Sonnie Hale, who played goofy comedy roles in several of her starring vehicles, but whose direction of three of them (including the lesser if enjoyable "Head Over Heels" 1937) left a bit to be desired.
Late in life, Matthews also gave a number of concerts in America and on the London stage where her career got started, her light soprano retaining a great deal of its nostalgic charm.
Matthews also made a handful film appearances from the 1940s on, perhaps most memorably by bringing a warm glow to the modest role of the tiny protagonist's mother in the beloved fantasy, "tom thumb" (1958).

This particular session, Dianne said to me that an odd-sounding lady was coming to audition for her in an hour, with her manager who said she claimed to have been very famous in England many years before, and had I heard of her because she hadn't, her name was Jessie Matthews.
Of course I said she was very well known on the other side of the Atlantic, but I wanted to know more.
"My God", I blurted out, "Are you Jessie Matthews, I mean THE Jessie Matthews?" Tears came into her eyes, as she smiled and smiled, and said, so sweetly, "You remember me then?" "Of course", I said, although I had never actually seen her in action and did not recognize her, far before my time.
