Jessie Pope is contrasted as an unreliable source next to first hand witnesses such as Owen, who experienced the First World War from the trenches.
Jessie Pope's poetry represents a patriotism that is rarely expressed to such an extreme in other female writing of the war.
By analysing Pope at the forefront of female poetry, students are not being exposed to ideas about women such as their difficult relationship in the workforce, their knowledge of the war through men coming home on leave, their awareness of casualty lists and the deaths of friends or relations.

Jessie Pope   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
As her poetry progresses, a distinct sense of irony moves into the poems, especially something like 'The Beau Ideal', which I think cannot help but be a satire on her early work, especially since when it's read without the baggage that surrounds it.
Pope was also responsible for editing Tressell's 'The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists' in 1914, so I think to argue that she was a naive silly woman who didn't open her eyes to the actualities of war falls apart after closer reading.
As has already been pointed out, a great deal of the poems reproduced by her are early war poems, not late ones where both combatants and civilians were beginning to express less vainglorious sentiments about war, although this was still very limited.

Spacing issues throughout each draft include extra spaces before and after punctuation and large gaps between words, which, in a handwritten document, are not easily attributable to typos.
Owen went back and forth between dedicating the poem “To Jessie Pope, etc.” and “To A Certain Poetess.” 21, 22 has no dedication.
“To Jessie Pope, etc.” is stricken through on 41v and replaced with “To a certain Poetess.” He went back to Jessie Pope on 316, but settled on Poetess by 318.
