Jesus Prayer -- Facts, Info, and Encyclopedia article   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
The prayer is most reflective of the lesson taught by the parable of the Publican and the Pharisee; in which the Pharisee demonstrates the improper way to pray by exclaiming, “Thank you Lord that I am not like the Publican”.
Monastics often have long sessions praying this prayer many hundreds of times each night as part of their discipline, and through the guidance of an elder, its practitioner’s ultimate goal is to "internalize" the prayer, so that one is praying unceasingly there-by accomplishing Saint Paul's exhortation to the Thessalonians to "pray without ceasing".
This is a common version of the Jesus Prayer used by (The Christian Church based in the Vatican and presided over by a pope and an episcopal hierarchy) Roman Catholics.

 Encyclopedia: Jesus Prayer
In the Eastern tradition the prayer is said or prayed repeatedly, often with the aid of a chotki (or prayer rope), somewhat resembling a rosary.
A prayer rope is a loop made up of knots, usually made of wool, that is used by Eastern Orthodox Christians to count the number of times they have prayed the Jesus Prayer: Lord Jesus Christ, son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.
Prayer is an effort to communicate with God, or to some deity or deities, or another form of spiritual entity, or otherwise, either to offer praise, to make a request, or simply to express ones thoughts and emotions.

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me a sinner
The prayer is profoundly rooted in the spirit of the gospel, and it is not in vain that the great teachers of Orthodoxy have always insisted on the fact that the Jesus Prayer sums up the whole of the gospel.
The Jesus Prayer is known to innumerable Orthodox, either as a rule of prayer or in addition to it, as a form of devotion, a short focal point that can be used at any moment, whatever the situation.
The use of the prayer is dual, it is an act of worship as is every prayer, and on the ascetical level, it is a focus that allows us to keep our attention still in the presence of God.
