Jetboat -- Facts, Info, and Encyclopedia article   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
Jet boats are highly maneuverable and can often be reversed and brought to a stop within its own length from full speed in a maneuver known as a Hamilton turn.
This is achieved using multiple (The blade of a rotor (as in the compressor of a jet engine)) impeller stages to accelerate the water.
Jet boats are normally powered by a V8 petrol engine, often an adapted automotive engine from a high performance car manufacturer.

Jetboat - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A jetboat is a boat propelled by a jet of water ejected from the back of the craft.
Unlike a powerboat or motorboat that uses a propeller in the water behind the boat, a jetboat draws the water from under the boat into a pump-jet inside the boat, then expels it through a nozzle at the stern.
Jetboats were originally designed by inventor Bill Hamilton to operate in the fast-flowing and shallow rivers of New Zealand to overcome the problem of propellers striking rocks in such waters, although Italian inventor Secondo Campini demonstrated a similar vessel as early as 1931 in Venice.

Jet Drive - Boat Design Forums
Water enters the jet unit intake on the bottom of the boat, at boat speed, and is accelerated through the jet unit and discharged through the transom at a high velocity.
Jet drives are suitable for use on semi-planing and displacement hulls when the benefits of jets (low draft, avoidance of propeller repairs, excellent low speed maneuverability, low noise and vibration levels, safety for personnel and aquatic mammals in the water, low maintenance, simplicity, and durability) are important, or essential, in the operation of the vessel.
Jet drives designed for planing craft are generally not the best solution for displacement craft requiring the benefits of jet propulsion as large diameter impellers and high water volume, rather than high water velocity, are required.

Props vs Jet drives - Boat Design Forums
I remember when I had a jet drive ski boat and the prop boats of similar size were fasted and didn't use near the fuel I did.
The relative efficiency of jets and props is fixed by a few simple aspects of geometry, mainly the size of the jet nozzle vs the diameter of the prop.
However, a jet, being an enclosed pump, is more efficient than a prop at speeding up the water it encounters and big props tend to have big struts and shafts which cause drag at high speeds.

Existing jet boats have the identical problem as the first generation of jet airplanes.
Jets are safer than outdrives (no prop in the water).

The impeller and jet drive would always be submerged so I suppose there is the concern for corrosion and marine growth in the unit just as there is with a stern drive.
The issue of docking or mooring a jet boat (or jet ski) is one of galvanic corrosion.
Historically Jet boats used either Jet Ski or Outboard powerheads, which people removed from the water and flushed after each use, so less attention was probably ever given to corrosion protection on the design of those motors.

 Understanding Your Jet Boat
Most boat owners like to perform at least a certain amount of their boat maintenance themselves to ensure continuing good performance and reliability.
The great thing about jet boats is that the engine RPM's should remain the same throughout the life of the boat, regardless of age, loading, water conditions, towing, whatever.
Racing boats frequently have a fuel pressure gauge which is, with the tachometer, probably the most important engine instrument.

 Jet Boat Information
Jet boats come in different types and sizes, but they all have one thing in common – they depend on a high-pressure column of water pushed out of the engine to propel the boat.
With the right boat, a highly skilled driver, and a consistent bottom, you can run in as little as two-to-three inches of water.
Inboard jets usually consist of automotive style engines that are “marinized” for use in boats and to which are fitted jet pump systems.

Hamilton Jet - Pioneers of Waterjet Propulsion
In 1954, on a shallow fast flowing river in the back country of the South Island of New Zealand, a small boat overcame the forces of nature to travel upstream against the current.
The boat was a Hamilton Jetboat, and is recognised as the genesis of the modern waterjet propulsion system.
Today, waterjets are the preferred propulsion choice for a wide range of work and patrol vessels, and pleasure craft where high efficiency, outstanding manoeuvrability, shallow draft capability and low maintenance are key requirements.
