Fighter aircraft - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A fighter aircraft is a military aircraft designed primarily for attacking other aircraft, as opposed to a bomber, which is designed to attack ground targets, primarily by dropping bombs.
Piston-engined fighters continued to be refined and developed with increasing performance and capabilities, up until the advent of jet aircraft such as the Messerschmitt Me 262 and Gloster Meteor.
Fighters such as the MiG-23 and Panavia Tornado have versions specially suited for various roles, while the latest multirole warplanes including the F/A-18 Hornet and Dassault Mirage 2000 are just as suited for ground attack as they are for aerial combat.

Jet aircraft - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The first aircraft to incorporate significant principles of the jet engine was the Coanda-1910 (Romania), piloted by its inventor Henri Coanda in 1910.
Modern jets generally cruise at speeds of 0.75 to 0.85 Mach, which is to say, 75 percent to 85 percent of the speed of sound.
The speed of sound is a function of air temperature, and therefore the speed of a jet is not really "constant" in terms of miles per hour, but varies by atmospheric conditions.

F-85 McDonnell Parasite Jet Fighter   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
The wartime problem was solved by the development of longrange escort fighters, but as the war was ending, the USAAF was beginning to develop bombers such as the Boeing B-50 and Convair B-36, whose range was three to five times greater than that of the bombers that had been used against Germany.
Designed as the Model 27 under the leadership of Herman D Barkley, the XF-85 was intended to be carried by the Convair B-36 bomber and was the subject of a Letter of Intent for two prototypes on 9 October 1945.
A small, egg-shaped aircraft with vertically-folding wings and triple vertical tail surfaces, the fighter was intended to be launched from and recovered by a retractable trapeze.

Unequivocally Britain's most loved jet fighter, the Lightning earned itself legitimately a place among the greats of celebrated aviation legends.
"The Cold War demanded that jet aircraft designers produce an aircraft capable of high performance at all altitudes and in all conditions, with sufficient room inside for the relevant avionics, and the ability to carry a heavy offensive load on the underwing and under-fuselage pylons.
Advanced jet aircraft are so expensive that the economy of Great Britain was severely strained by the development and production of the Lightning." ("Aviation, an Illustrated History", Christopher Chant, ©1983 Orbis Publishing, London).
