Jets to Brazil / Shiner - PopMatters Concert Review
Much has been made in the press and by fans concerning JTB's refusal to become "Jawbreaker2," but that of course is just the bickering of small minds that refuse to allow their heroes to leave them.
JTB's sound draws from a wider spectrum than did Jawbreaker, from the intro of "Time of My Life" that sounds like the beginning of Pink Floyd's "Shine on You Crazy Diamond" or the Wire-influenced material found on the bands first release "Orange Rhyming Dictionary".
But it was the muscular pop of Blake Schwarzenbach and Jets to Brazil that caused the crowd to bop and sing along, much like their parents might have done to Cheap Trick 20 years ago.

In this era of disposable bands, we need to be especially thankful for groups like Jets to Brazil.
JtB have not only released their second album, Four Cornered Night, but have overcome the proverbial sophomore slump by maturing and growing together as a band, delivering an album that is more poised and more elegant than their debut.
Shedding the layers of blustering power chords and shrieking feedback that plagued their debut has proved to be the best thing JtB could ever have done.

So the Jets to Brazil story goes a little something like this: After spending the better part of the '90s as the frontman for the celebrated San Francisco-based pop-punk outfit Jawbreaker, Blake Schwarzenbach decided he'd had enough of the rock and roll lifestyle and resolved to move to New York and become a writer.
Jets to Brazil has released two albums thus far: their first, 1998's critically heralded Orange Rhyming Dictionary, was (not surprisingly) produced by Jawbox emeritus J.
"Starry Configurations," from Orange Rhyming Dictionary, is quintessential Jets to Brazil: powerful and anguished, the song tells a story about human frailty, sketching out the feeling of being dwarfed by the enormity of the universe in thick, expansive sonic brushstrokes.

Their first record “Orange Rhyming Dictionary,” which hit in 1998 on the independent label Jade Tree records, was an electrifying beginning for a band that had some skeptics and expectations to live up to.
Its intro tune “The Frequency” is soaked in somber, dreamy, softly distorted guitars that JTB themselves couldn’t veer away from this time.
Not knowing if there’s a future for Jets To Brazil since rumors of an unannounced break up have been circulating all year, it’s hard being left with the last words in their lo-fi closing track “Rocket Boy:” “Your best friend is you again.

Jets frontman Blake Schwartzenbach is no stranger to criticism.
Perfecting Lonliness surely isn’t going to break the streak; the 1970’s FM radio feel that permeates such an ambitious album simply is not for everyone.
The songs themselves are among Blake’s catchiest to date, all simplicity and melodic conciseness, but their sprawling arrangements (aided by ex-Jawbox production whiz J. Robbins) add an interesting sonic touch.

Perfecting Loneliness by Jets To Brazil at Audio Lunchbox
It seemed certain that Jets to Brazil's tentative, lyrically driven rock, as captured on their critically hailed second disc, Four Cornered Night, would raise singer-guitarist Blake Schwarzenbach to star status among the college cutie set.
Schwarzenbach's conversational delivery makes his missives that much more searing (it's as if he's talking right to you) and if the songs lack the immediacy of those of kindred spirits such as Spoon, they grow with each play.

Which brings us to Jets to Brazil and Four Cornered Night, an album that makes Orange Rhyming Dictionary sound like Dear You, and makes Dear You sound like, I don't know, fucking Nevermind or something.
On that record, he seemed to be flushing out his lyric notebooks and establishing a new sound distinct from Jawbreaker's old Gilman Street influences-- still a lot of rock, but not as much punk.
Four Cornered Night steers Jets to Brazil toward a more expanded, power- pop sound, adding a second guitarist and plenty of piano-and-keyboard sprinkles throughout.

It was a running gag between me and my friends to dismiss the album with a simple, "Yeah, but it's no Jawbreaker"-- but it was just a joke; the promise of Dictionary's easy hooks was self-evident.
