  Jeux d'eau, for piano
Jeux d'eau, which translates as "Play of Water" or "Fountains," draws heavily on the technically brilliant pianistic style of Franz Liszt, one of Ravel's heroes; indeed, many think that Ravel's work is something of an homage to Liszt's similarly scintillating Les jeux d'eau à la Villa d'Este (1870).
Jeux d'eau is thoroughly saturated with the rich sonorities of major seventh chords -- a feature found even in Ravel's earliest music, here taken to a new level.
While there are clearly two recognizable themes in Jeux d'eau, they are by no means worked out in the Classical manner; to describe the piece as a sonata-allegro form, as indeed some have done, is out of the question.

Gorus is unafraid of broad give-and-take in his playing, beginning with the dreamy delicacy of Ravel's Jeux Deau (a musical description of water at play in a fountain) before moving on to the wide expanses of Liszt's Sonata in B minor; Gorus, fortunately, has the emotional presence to pull off his passionate approach.

DVD Booty - Martha Argerich Plays Schumann Piano Concerto in A minor / Liszt Funerailles / Ravel Jeux d'Eau
Sometimes, for better effects, she would play with the fleshy part of her fingers with her hand(s) flat; for a particular effect, she would bend her wrist sideways so much; and for a fifth finger fortissimo, she would use the outside of her small finger instead of the finger tip!
With her Jeux d'eau, while my memory of Richter's playing is still vivid, I must say Martha's colour and her delicate touch were almost as good as Richter.
I am not a great fan of Martha, as she is not always consistent and her style doesn't cover a great deal of the whole piano repertoire.

I seem to remember quite a bit of musical turbulence communicated by Berman in the first of these pieces.
Many musicians and listeners are well-acquainted with the "Jeux Deau a La Ville D'Este," the water fountain piece that has been cited as an important precursor to Debussy and Ravel (the latter wrote a beautiful, sparkling piece of the same name--"Jeux Deau").

Below are listed all the examples of how Fiedler MIGHT have conducted the Basic Rep classics; drawn from a batch of "music appreciation" collections, most in mono, at least give an idea of how great was the range of his talent, had he been given a chance to exercise it.
Source is a "Music Treasures" LP – one of those in the industrial-strength vinyl sleeves but no album cover as such, and there are scratches on both sides; some bands are relatively clean, some require patience and high tolerance, but the sound per se is pretty good.
The music – well, honestly, I haven’t played it yet, having acquired the disc only recently, but one expects it to be appropriate for what the notes describe as a "gay, ultra-sophisticated story".

Richter was an outrageous pianist; you may admire or disagree with his musical conceptions; but instead of that statement, you must recognize the presence of the genius in this unforgettable russian artist.
The Prokofiev Sonata no.6 has only been surpassed by Richter himself, in his Praga live recording (which also has more liquid sound) The sonatas final movement, where Richter plays with a stunning sense of rhythm and incredible virtuosity, is one of his finest moments.
The liner notes are good, but some of Harold Schonbergs remarks are doubtful (he says, among other things, that Richter lacks the power of Serkin or the technique of Cherkassky, wboth of which statements do not seem true to me).

It is a mature sound, but one incapable of presenting the real heart, the meat of the music.
In the final analysis, however, I hear too much technique for Berman to be supremely musical; every note seems to click in, and sometimes I hear more finger-work than sound.
In listening to Berman, I hear a technique which is used for musical ends, which is good thing - but still, I perceive his technique as much as his musicality, which, by the way, leaves a lot to be desired.

Ravel's Jeux d'Eau, which translates a fountain's flow and glitter into piano music, exemplifies the quality that most people notice first in her playing: dexterity and precision at breathtaking speeds.
But the heart of the program is Schumann's Concerto in A Minor, one of the 19th century's greatest works in that form, rich in virtuoso display and heart-on-sleeve emotion and requiring fine rapport between soloist and orchestra.
Martha Argerich has (many) moments in this performance where she seems to be animated by the conductor of heaven's own choir, where it seems as if she has ceased to exist as a human being, and is simply a direct conduit for the divine.

This substantial (and astonishingly accomplished work) dates from the composers fourteenth year and lay utterly forgotten until the manuscript weas loaned to Menuhin in the mid-Fifties, which is when this one and only recording was made.
His only recordings were for the strange but always intriguing subscription label, the Musical Masterworks Society, which persisted in issuing everything on 10-inch discs long after that format went into permanent decline.
Not only were these the only recordings of many worthy but very obscure works, but the drop-dead brilliance of Voisin’s playing "sold" the music with such enthusiasm that these discs have become highly sought-after collectors’ items.
