The best portrayals of war seem to be those in which war functions as background, as in Jeux interdits.
The film is similar to Jeux interdits in that it is not an illustration, but rather a commentary on war, on the theatrics
It suggests that war is a (strategic and tactical) game; that weapons are the toys of adults; that people are toys; that at the end.there is always a force that transforms most ordinary competition into a relentless fight for life - or against it.

Best Films of 1952 Jeux interdits aka Forbidden Games Rene Clement Gary Cooper Julie Harris   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-30)
Les Jeux interdits / Forbidden Games is one of the few exceptions.
As a plus, Les Jeux interdits boasts one of the best film scores ever, Narciso Yepes's “Romance d'amour,” and two of the greatest child performances ever recorded on celluloid: Brigitte Fossey's and Georges Poujouly's as the two kids obsessed with their animal cemetery.
We feel confident in our (highly judgmental) appraisal of reactions to this particular film: If your eyes are dry at the end of Les Jeux interdits, you can be sure you're as dead as the animals in the children's pet cemetery.

The cartoons are very faithful to the original stories, and capture the spirit of the books (I've included the cover art below).
The DVD I purchased, Jeux Interdits, contains 41 two-and-a-half-minute cartoons, all in French, without subtitles.
As the dialogue is limited, and the humour is mostly visual, I don't think anyone would have any problems understanding the cartoons.

Guitarist Bireli Lagrene's cameos on the bluesy title track and the swinging "Que Reste-T'Il de Nos Amours?" (aka "I Wish You Love") are nothing short of brilliant.
Saxophonist Stefano di Battista also makes two fine appearances, playing tenor on the fast, tense "Jeux Interdits" and soprano on the lively and pretty "L'Aigle Noir," one of the two originals.
Both Lagrene and Battista return for the brief, full-company finale, an intoxicating funk line by Terrasson titled "Metro."

Based on François Boyer's novel Les Jeux inconnus, René Clément's 1952 adaptation would be hailed as a masterpiece of French cinema, earning, among numerous other awards, an honorary Oscar for Best Foreign Language film.
It is a story of lost innocence brought on by the ravages of war as experienced through the eyes of children.

Most of them are from Hergé but some are from Johan De Moor (son of Bob De Moor).
Johan De Moor did two QandF books, according to this page - Haute Tension and Jeux Interdits; however Lambiek.net suggests he worked on QandF from 1981 to 1986, so they may be collections of strips published elsewhere (one of the Tintin magazines?), and therefore there may be uncollected strips too).
Just to get back on topic, I don’t own any QandF books, but I must get round to it some day…
