Jewish Currents - Edward Filene: Pioneer of Social Responsibility
This is the fifth article in a series that celebrates the 350th anniversary of Jewish emigration to the U.S. by profiling prominent American Jewish social activists.
An important Jewish social reformer of the early 20th century was a capitalist, known today mostly for his retailing acumen.
At one time or another, he was chair of the executive committee of the American Jewish Committee, honorary chair of the United Jewish Appeal, and national director of the Jewish Welfare Board in short, a dedicated and beloved, public-spirited figure.

Lenni Brenner: Zionism in the Age of the Dictators (Chap. 17)
All Zionists saw the solving of the Jewish question as their most important task, and they sharply counterposed Jewish nationalism to any concept of international solidarity; none despised “red assimilation” more vigorously than the Labour Zionists.
In later years the bravery of the Jewish left-wingers who fought and died in Spain has been used to prove that “the Jews” did not go as sheep to the slaughter during the Holocaust.
They cannot bring themselves to repudiate their venture or to claim that the Zionists were correct in denouncing them for fighting in Spain, but in retrospect they have sought to emphasise the “national” Jewish aspect of their involvement and they have carefully counted every Jew in the long lists of those who fought.

Betty Friedan and the Radical Past of Liberal Feminism
She currently researches and has published articles on the impact of new medical imaging technologies on debates about abortion rights.
Horowitz thereby positions himself within current debates within American historiography as part of a stream of historians who wish to restore the image of the CPUSA as an organization comprised of "home-grown radicals," motivated by a passion for social justice.
His argument is that this must have struck terror into Friedan's heart, given that she was a radical Jewish woman with extensive Party connections (though he doesn't say this explicitly), that she had dated a party member working on the atom bomb, and so on.

 A Challenge to Paul Buhle
Israeli historians had never seen any evidence for the assertion.
Editors at Jewish Currents, long associated with Communist causes before becoming an independent left-wing Jewish magazine, recalled no such individuals.
If Buhle had such evidence, why did he not cite it in his encyclopedia entry or tell us where it was when we inquired?
