Jewish Renewal - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This Jewish Renewal movement casts Kabbalistic and Hasidic theory and practice within a non-Orthodox, egalitarian framework.
Jewish Renewal, in its most general sense, has its origins in the North American Jewish counter-cultural trends of the late 1960s and early 1970s.
Critics of Jewish Renewal claim that the movement emphasizes individual spiritual experience and subjective opinion over communal norms and Jewish textual literacy; the above-mentioned formalization of the ALEPH rabbinic program may be a response to such criticism.

 Velveteen Rabbi: Defining Renewal
I've heard Renewal described as "feminist neo-Hasidism," and there's some truth to that; we draw both on feminism's social and political shifts, and on the mystical, joyful passion of the Hasidic world.
Renewal is an attitude, not a denomination; adherents of Renewal come from all of the branches of Judaism.
Renewal is a grassroots, transdenominational approach to Judaism which seeks to revitalize Judaism by drawing on the immanence-consciousness of feminism, the joy of Hasidism, the informed do-it-yourself spirit of the havurah movement, and the accumulated wisdom of centuries of tradition.

 Vegetarianism: Essential for Jewish Renewal?
Jewish renewal means a return to Jewish traditions in a process Rabbi Arthur Waskow has called "Godwrestling," struggling with the Torah and Jewish traditions to find deeper meanings.
Jewish vegetarians in particular are constantly wrestling with a tradition that, on the one hand, has been centered on animal sacrifices and the eating of meat on festivals, but that, on the other hand, contains strong indications that vegetarianism is at the heart of Jewish tradition.
Some of the greatest Jewish sages have taught that permission to eat meat was given later only as a grudging concession to people's weakness, and that many prohibitions and restrictions were applied to keep alive a sense of reverence for life.

Many of these Jewish seekers are now returning “home,” finding in the Jewish Renewal movement that which they were unaware existed in Judaism, a bridge between traditional Judaism and the mysticism and spiritual depth for which they search.
Actually these practices are nothing new in Judaism, but are ancient beliefs, long “hidden.” Jewish Renewal has renewed these practices and made them accessible, stressing our oneness with God, social justice, gender and sexual equality, and ecology and planetary transformation.
Jewish Renewal is based on the teachings of Rabbis Zalman Schachte - Shalomi and Shlomo Carlebach, both trained in the Lubavitch Chassidic movement, which is derived from mystical Jewish teachings.

Jewish Renewal is neither a denomination nor a movement.
Jewish Renewal tends to be inclusive, universal, innovative, iconoclastic and oriented toward social change.
As a Renewal Rabbinical student, I was not only invited, but expected to seek out meaningful spiritual practices from other faiths, to learn about them and, where appropriate, to dress them in Jewish garb and use them in teaching and personal practice.

Jewish Renewal is a colorful tapestry of matching, contrasting, clashing, and original threads representing Judaism’s diverse history and denominations.
Although this article opened by suggesting that Jewish Renewal emphasizes small worship groups, it would be inaccurate to suggest that somehow the spirit and fervor of Jewish Renewal would be diminished in a larger group.

It is a kind of neo-Hasidism, in that it seeks the spiritual renewal of Judaism, but "neo" because it insists on full equality for women and a creative return to the process of transforming Hallakhah (Jewish law) so that it continues to be a living path to connection to God.
Jewish Renewal energy is flowing through all the various denominations of Jewish life - and it will eventually help to transform all of them.
But if you are interested in Jewish Renewal, we want to encourage you to become part of the TIKKUN community, because it is in TIKKUN that we try to provide the space for both the theological and the political discussions that provide the foundation for a spiritual renewal of the Jewish people.

Many felt themselves to be somewhere in the middle: sympathetic and supportive of the principle of Jewish same-sex weddings while expressing the need for more time to look more deeply into the issue from multiple perspectives.
These perspectives included a close consideration of traditional Jewish sources as well as of the lived reality of Jewish gays and lesbians and the pain and isolation that so many of our gay and lesbian brothers and sisters have felt by their exclusion from Jewish communal and spiritual life.
We learned that the Jewish tradition sees sexual relationships to be appropriate primarily within the context of marriage; and, conversely, that a major purpose of marriage was to provide a framework for positive sexual relationships.

 What is Jewish Renewal?
Jewish renewal is non-denominational (sometimes referred to as trans- or post-denominational) Judaism.
Because of its emphasis on direct spiritual experience and mystical or Kabbalistic teachings, Jewish renewal is sometimes referred to as Neo-Hasidic or Four Worlds Judaism (a reference to the "four worlds" of Jewish mysticism).
Jewish Renewal is sometimes referred to as "New Age" by people who do not know that meditation, dance, chant, and mysticism have been present in Judaism throughout the ages and not, as some mistakenly believe, patched on to Judaism from other cultures or made up out of whole cloth.

In this impassioned, profound manifesto, he taps the roots of Jewish tradition through a close reading of the Torah, Talmud and Old Testament, seeking to reclaim the progressive impulse in Judaism which holds that nothing is inevitable about evil or social injustice.
He then outlines a plan for Jewish renewal that combines commitment to family, community and tradition with a "revolutionary conception" of a compassionate God who makes freedom possible and who can assist in the task.
While creative, his thinking is not cohesive, and he remarks that the "Jewish Renewal movement is in its toddler stage." Intended for Jewish readers of all backgrounds and levels of knowledge, this book will have primary appeal to those who already hold left-wing social and political views.

B'nai Or and the Jewish Renewal Movement
The old B'nai Or was much more orthodox than the Jewish Renewal movement of today (which grew out of B'nai Or.) It was closer to what is now called Traditional Judaism (or Conservadox), except that it had a much more mystical bent to it.
Reb Zalman once told me that he envisioned it as a repository of Chassidic knowledge that would preserve and renew the Jewish spirituality that was destroyed in the Holocaust -- similar to the way that the Essenes retreated to the wilderness to preserve their knowledge from being lost under persecution of the Romans.
But somewhere along the line, in the transition from B'nai Or to Jewish Renewal, the lab experiments became the davening itself, which was just too strange for me. And a lot was lost in the process, I think.

The author of the highly popular and widely quoted Jewish Way in Death and Mourning and Jewish Way in Love and Marriage now offers a work designed expressly for non-Jews who are contemplating converting, for those who have already converted, and for Jews by birth who wish to gain insight into their heritage.

Michael Lerner, editor of the influential bimonthly U.S. Jewish magazine Tikkun, has provided a version of a Jewish "liberation theology" with his Jewish Renewal (Grosset/Putnam, 1994, 436 pages, $25.95).
He also seeks to criticize the limitations of leftist politics for its inattention to a complex of issues that he has called 'the politics of meaning,' such as the spiritual and ethical needs of community and connection that go way beyond economic entitlements typically championed by the liberal left.
He hopes to show how a renewed Jewish religious life can be a compelling model for other communities struggling to reclaim the voice of God in their traditions, in opposition to the all-too-human voices of cruelty that invariably accompany the divine voice.

 V'aschanan: Jewish Renewal
This does not necessarily have to mean something new about the person; rather, it means that the original feelings do not feel stale, but, on the contrary, feel fresh.
In our daily prayers we say, “And in His (G-d’s) goodness He renews and perpetuates creation daily.” Besides this renewal being a practical aspect of creation (in physics this is known as quantum uncertainty), this is true metaphysically, as G-d’s love for the Jewish people is undiminished from our original “marriage” (at Sinai).
Not only that, but He created the commandments with such a multitude of expression within them, that there is always newness within the performance.
