 Jewish Theological Seminary
Tenants at two buildings on West 122nd Street, threatened with eviction by the Jewish Theological Seminary, recently won an important victory in their struggle to keep their homes.
A key component of the case was that the seminary failed to meet one legal requirement--that it actually owned the buildings when the tenants moved in.
In late 1995, the seminary announced that it would not renew the leases of tenants who moved into the buildings after July 1, 1978--the cutoff date in the rent-stabilization law for the right to a renewal lease in buildings owned by not-for-profits.

Education Update - Chancellor Ismar Schorsch, Jewish Theological Seminary
Though in some ways unique, the joint or dual-degree arrangement between Jewish Theology Seminary (JTS) and Columbia University's School of General Studies (SGS) is cited by JTS Chancellor Dr. Ismar Schorsch as a “model” for collaboration between religious and secular institutions.
While certainly reflective of the conservative culture of the seminary, the dual program demonstrates that religious belief and skepticism need not be antagonistic and indeed can be mutually beneficial.
His dissertation, on Jewish reactions to German anti-Semitism, 1870-1914, a “negative” subject, turned him to explore further “what Jews did about it,” and the result was a prize-winning book published by Columbia University Press.

The Sacred Cluster, The Jewish Theological Seminary
Heinrich Graetz, who taught at the movement's rabbinical seminary in Breslau and authored the most nationalistic history of the Jews ever written, inspired Moses Hess to pen one of the earliest Zionist tracts in 1862 and would not write of the biblical period until he had personally visited Palestine in early 1872.
In a Jewish world of sundry and proliferating divisions, Hebrew must emerge as the common and unifying language of the Jewish people, and nothing would advance that vision more effectively than to redefine Zionism today solely in terms of the ability to speak Hebrew.
The sixth core value is the governance of Jewish life by halakha, which expresses the fundamental thrust of Judaism to concretize ethics and theology into daily practice.

All the major issues dividing Jews from gentiles in England are documented in this collection of ephemera: from Menasseh ben Israel’s appeal to Cromwell in the 1650s to allow Jews to re-enter the country, through the uproar over the naturalization bill of 1753, to the admission of Lionel de Rothschild to Parliament in 1858.
