Jew - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Some Jewish communities, ranging from the Lost Ten Tribes in the 700s BCE to the Kaifeng Jews of China, have disappeared entirely, but assimilation has remained relatively low over much of the past millenium, as Jews were often not allowed to integrate with the wider communities in which they lived.
While Jewish communities throughout the Islamic world were often treated well by their Muslim rulers, depending on the regime in power, Jewish communities in Spain, North Africa, and the Middle East were at times subject to persecutions, expulsions, and forced conversion.
Judaism shares some of the characteristics of a nation, an ethnicity, a religion, and a culture, making the definition of who is a Jew vary slightly depending on whether a religious or national approach to identity is used.

"American Jewish Public Activity -- Identity, Demography, and the Institutional Challenge," by Sherry Israel
From this perspective, Jewish acculturation may be seen not as abandoning Jewishness for an American identity (the usual assimilationist interpretation), but of internalizing the new cultural definitions of ethnicity, which permit and encourage the persistence of an ethnic subidentity and allow for its expression in both private and public ways.
Ethnicity is carried in the individual's head as an inner identity, and it is expressed sporadically, often in response to life cycle or other individually-related stimuli.
Jewish community centers, which are highly dependent on member and user fees and thus became aware of these trends before most communal organizations, now routinely have marketing consultants or even in-house marketing professionals to help them figure out how to attract members.

 American Jewry: Ethnicity or faith?
Ethnicity was measured in terms of Jewish peoplehood, "tribalism," the feeling of being marginalized because of membership in a specific minority group, commitment to "in-marriage," attachment to Israel, having Jewish friends, attachment to Jewish institutions and belief in social justice as a Jewish value.
Cohen, who released the results of a survey of American Jewish attitudes that was sponsored by the Jewish Community Center Association, sees this decline in ethnicity rather than a decline in religiosity as key to understanding the rising levels of intermarriage and assimilation.
Not surprisingly, he found that young Jews are less committed to every aspect of ethnicity as he defined them, including the idea of a Jewish people, marrying a Jew and less attached to Israel.

Between the fourteenth and the eighteenth centuries, the Jewish population in the Crimea was replenished with a rather significant number of emigrants from the Mediterranean countries, Eastern Europe and also from the Caucasus and Persia.
This is true with respect to the majority of the Jewish population of the Soviet Union, particularly with respect to the Ashkenazim who constitute about ninety percent of the total Jewish population in that country.

 Canadian Jewish News
The sharp decline in the Jewish population in Quebec between 1996 and 2001 can’t be explained by more Jews choosing “Canadian” as their ethnic origin in the 2001 census to the exclusion of “Jewish,” says Jack Jedwab, executive director of the Association for Canadian Studies.
Jedwab, who cross-tabulated the ethnicity data released by Statistics Canada in January, found the proportion of Jews declaring Canadian as part of a multiple ethnic identity was no greater in Quebec than elsewhere in the country.
The recent census found 348,610 people who declared Jewish as at least one of their ethnic identities (respondents were permitted to choose up to four).

Center to Preserve Traditional Western Culture (CPTWC): The Jewish Problem: A Patriotic Manifesto
Persons of Jewish ethnicity have indeed played a very large, disproportionate role in what are commonly known as "left-wing" or adversary political movements in America, even though their population numbers in modern America are actually very small.
Mentions (quote) "the Jewish creators of 1930s-1950s popular culture." Further, the quote on the Statue of Liberty (by Emma Lazarus), Bugs Bunny's voice (Mel Blanc), Fonzi (Winkler), Barbara Walters, Ted Koppel, Irving Berlin, Benny Goodman, Ira Gershwin, and The Three Stooges were all Jewish by ethnicity.
Jewish persons naturally rise to the top of any profession they enter (e.g., the legal profession- a disproportionate number of lawyers are Jewish), because their unique history (far unlike that of any other peoples) has given them quicker intelligence, more cunning, superior "people skills," and a drive to succeed that would shame most non-Jews.

The History Cooperative Conference Proceedings Seascapes, Littoral Cultures, and Trans-Oceanic Exchanges The Jews of Nineteenth Century Charleston: Ethnicity in a Port City
One of the most important aspects of Jewish ethnicity in Charleston was their diasporic identity.
Jewish identity in Charleston was very much constructed as a result of the Port Jewish diasporaÀ religious, family and economic ties between Charleston Jews and communities in places such as London, Germany, and the Caribbean were still strong in the antebellum period.
Likewise the Jewish community embraced Charlestonian culture in its entirety, fought in wars, was loyal to the nation, the state and the city and held excellent relations with white Charlestonians.

 Canadian Jewish News
Jewish is the only religion that is also classified as an ethnicity by the census.
Shahar said the community gets its national Jewish total by adding together census respondents who call themselves Jewish both by religion and ethnicity, as well those who list Jewish as their religion but list other ethnicities (such as Canadian), or say they have no religion but list Jewish as their only ethnicity.
Canadians who define themselves as Jewish by ethnicity but indicate another religion are not counted.

Can This White Lutheran Play Klezmer? Reflections on Race, Ethnicity and Revival
While ethnicity complicates our discussion of what it is to be White, a single-minded focus on ethnicity distracts us from the deep and specifically American ways our thinking about ethnicity has been shaped and centered around notions of race.
When earlier Jewish musicians who included klezmer in their repertories -- such as David Tarras, Ray Musiker, Sid Beckerman, Pete Sokolow, and yes, Mickey Katz -- were still alive, leaders in the revival -- such as Lev Liberman and Henry Sapoznik -- found the msuic they began to call "klezmer" on archival recordings.
Klezmer is understood to be not only Jewish ethnic music as it falls in the racializing tendencies of American music, but is is also marked by the self-conciousness of revivalism.

Article - Ethnicity versus Beliefs in Jewish Marriage
Quite apart from the question of Jewish survival, to which Kevin’s contribution is unlikely to be significant, I just don’t think that people of fundamentally different beliefs should marry.
A secularized American of Jewish ancestry like Kevin, could safely marry a secularized American girl of Christian ancestry.
What was even more amazing to me was that it was no more significant to him than that he planned on spending Saturday mornings at his car club’s race track.

This was particularly so because of the infestation of pagan worship in the religion of the Israel caused by Queen Jezebel of Israel (a Phoenician Princess).
It came into use at the end of the 18th century* and thereafter became a standard technical term.

Messianic Judaism - In Search of Messianic Jewish Thought
Jewish identity (or “Jewishness”, if we think of some “essence” of being a Jew) results from a complex of factors such as history, language, culture, ethnicity, nationality, religion, and can not easily be reduced or simplified.
Jewishness and the Judaisms which have emerged within it ultimately owe their existence to divine prerogative, God’s calling into being of the Jewish people to be a light and a witness to the nations.
This “Judaism” is not properly “Jewish” in the original sense that God intended “Jewishness” to be - a biblical culture and identity which reflects God’s presence and values, and is fulfilled in Christ.
