Jhabua is an outstanding example because it is an effort by the State Government to involve the people in land and water management.
Today, Jhabua is truly a temple of modern India, to use Nehru's phrase, and I would add, a temple of 21st Century India, which shows how poverty can be eradicated from its roots by empowering the local people to manage their environment.

The arid hills of Jhabua were torn by widespread violence after the raped body of a nine-year-old girl was found in a Catholic mission school in January.
In its recently-released report, the NFIW team says the violence in Jhabua spread after members of Hindu militant groups called for a general closure outside the mission's compound, though police investigations proved the crime had not been committed by a Christian.
Even now, the people of Jhabua protest that Christians are being singled out and abused by members of militant Hindu bodies affiliated to the Bharatiya Janata Party that rules Madhya Pradesh and is a majority partner in the ruling federal coalition.

A trial court in Alirajpur, Jhabua district of Madhya Pradesh has acquitted 16 Christians lodged in jail after charging them with murder, attempt to murder and arson on Wednesday, 31 May 2006.
Christians in Jhabua expressed their whole-hearted gratitude to Bhopal Archbishop, Pascal Topno and to the Regional Bishops Council for the unity and support that to the Christians in time of need.
Dr Sunil C Daniel, a general surgeon working in the affected area and was closely involved in the legal battle in his first reaction said, “it is an endorsement that God listens to the prayer of the innocents even though the role of the administration was dubious”.

Jhabua is placed fourth in terms of sex ratio, it said.
The total literacy rate in the district was 19.1 per cent according to the last census report, while it is 37.08 per cent in 2001 census, thus registering an increase of 19 per cent.

At least three persons were killed and over a dozen injured, most of them seriously, in group clashes in Jhabua district today, triggering tension and heavy deployment of security forces in sensitive areas.
Violent clashes and mob attacks were reported from Amkhur Alirajpur, Meghnagar and some other places, leading to worsening of the already tense situation since the rape and murder of a minor tribal girl inside a 'mission school' here.

The church's first visible presence in Jhabua was in 1992 when the Jeevan Jyoti hospital was opened in Meghnanagar, 18 km from Jhabua town, under the supervision of a doctor and eight nuns from Kerala.
