Jhelum river is one of the subsiaries of the Punjab river.
District Jhelum is situated in the North-East of Punjab, Jhelum spreads on both sides of the Grand Trunk Road.
It is bound in the North by Rawalpindi District, in the South by Mandi Baha-ud-Din, Gujrat and Sargodha in the East by Azad Jammu and Kashmir and in the West by Chakwal and Khushab from which it is separated by the mountain range called the Kohistan-e-Namak.

The Datts believe that their ancestors at one time established a dynasty in Arabia (Gazetteer Jhelum District 1904, page 120121) and they were the standard bearers of the Prophet of Islam in the war of Karbala, fought in 681 AD.
There were villages in these districts in which a certain caste of the Mohyals preponderated and the place was known with that caste as the suffix of its name viz., Kanjrur and Tehi Dattan., Dera Bakhshian and so on.
