Dao jia were those philosophers who tried to achieve immortality by improving and maintaining their mental and physical health by using qigong.
Dao jia philosophy and training methods were secrets highly guarded by their practitioners.
Traditionally, the dao jia would never join the discussion about the book or reveal its meaning because of the vows of secrecy that they had taken before they could be taught the art.

Shen Dao can be seen as rejecting the entrenched myth of the mandate of heaven with the simple observation that rulers become rulers because of circumstance, not because of their moral worth or desert.
Their study, however, is not of a moral dao, it is the study of the actual circumstances that result in one's becoming a ruler.

The famous Han poet and statesman Jia Yi concluded his essay The Faults of Qin with what was to become the standard Confucian judgment of the reasons for Qin's collapse.
Jia Yi's essay, admired as a masterpiece of rhetoric and reasoning, was copied into two great Han histories and has had a far-reaching influence on Chinese political thought as a classic illustration of Confucian theory.
He explained the ultimate weakness of Qin as a result of its ruler's ruthless pursuit of power, the precise factor which had made it so powerful; for as Confucius had taught, the strength of a government ultimately is based on the support of the people and virtuous conduct of the ruler.

 EARLY DAOISM
The lineage and legitimation of such literati Daoists comes from their devotion and dedication to the classical texts, which they interpret in commentaries and essays, and whose metaphors they employ in stories and poetry.
They may live a life of leisure or be active in society as local officials, poets and writers, or teachers at academies, but in all cases their self-identity derives from ideas centered on Dao.
Literati Daoists have been part of the tradition since its inception, and the ancient thinkers Laozi and Zhuangzi may well be considered their first example.

Laozi's is the most famous example of this dao of reversal, though overtones can be found in Zhuangzi's description of "the perfect" person or ability as one that is so incomprehensible and so irrelevant to our concerns that he appears as the opposite whatever we normally respect.
Hence Shen Dao "abandoned knowledge and discarded ‘self’." He flowed with the inevitable and was indifferent to natural kinds ….
Dao is also used concretely to refer to a road or path in Chinese, e.g., Queen's Road.

Lao Jia Yi Lu Lao jia yi lu (or old frame first set) is a key conditioning and training form within the Chen Style taijiquan system and it is also the parent form of the other major taijiquan styles (Yang, Wu).
Learning lao jia yi lu is of obvious interest to Chen stylists, and it is valuable to practitioners of the other classical styles in that they can see the original form and application of the moves they practice.
The movements of lao jia yi lu tend to be larger, more expansive, and less complex that the other Chen forms (xin jia, xiao jia, er lu) and therefore is studied first.
