	Jiajing Emperor - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
		The Jiajing Emperor (September 16, 1507–January 23, 1567) was the 11th emperor of China (Ming dynasty) between 1521-1567.
		The throne became vacant with the sudden death of Emperor Zhengde in 1521 and the 14 year old Jiajing was eventually chosen to become emperor and relocated from his father's fief to Beijing.
		Particularly during his later years, Jiajing was known for spending a great deal of time on alchemy in hopes of finding medicines to prolong his life.

		In 1815 in Sichuan 800 Christians were arrested; two leaders were strangled, and eleven were sentenced to wear the cangue (wooden yoke) for the rest of their lives.
		Emperor Jiajing continued China's tributary system that invested neighboring countries as vassals of the "middle kingdom." Korea brought tribute annually, Annam every other year, Ryuku and Siam every three years, and Burma and Laos every decade.

		The mark is the phonetic equivalent of the Chinese reignmark, "Jiajing nian zhi" (made in the reign of Jiajing [1522-1566]).
		The vessels were probably produced no later than the first years of Jiajing, since the ceramic decorative style changed soon after the beginning of the Jiajing reign in 1522.
		Furthermore, the Jiajing emperor's growing obsession with the Daoist religion (at the expense of the influence of the Buddhist church) would have made such a gift unlikely late in his reign.

		Jiajing performed the Butterfly Lovers Violin Concerto with Ku-ring-gai Philharmonic Orchestra for the Chinese Connections concert in 2005 and performs the Sibelius Violin Concerto as the 2005 Outstanding Performer for these concerts.
		Jiajing was selected to perform in March 2006 for the Encore concert at the Sydney Opera House as one of the best performers in 2005 HSC Music.

		In 1540 Jiajing announced he was going into seclusion to pursue immortality with Daoist aphrodisiacs and elixirs; an official who warned that they were dangerous was tortured to death.
		In 1542 the drunk Jiajing was nearly strangled to death by women in his harem; but he survived and had all the women involved executed.
		In 1552 Emperor Jiajing had 800 girls under the age of fourteen selected so that he could have intercourse with them at the first instance of menses in order to absorb the yang (male energy) from their yin (female energy).

		The shoulder of the vessel is painted with squared lappets, outlined in underglaze blue and filled with alternating rich colours of orange, yellow and blue, each containing a Buddhist emblem, while emerging from the base is a band of overlapping leaf tips in underglaze blue.
		The six-character reign mark of Jiajing is painted in underglaze blue on the base.
		The slightly domed wucai porcelain cover is surmounted by a bud-shaped finial richly painted in swirling bands of yellow, green, red and blue emerging from a row of petals.

		This is a very large Jiajing marked late Ming or early Qing export Chinese blue and white charger.
		It was nicely decorated with a spring scene with blossoming flowers and butterflies surrounded by floral and diaper borders.
		The six character Jiajing mark within a double circle was written in underglaze blue on the back.
