The Yangtze River or Chang Jiang is the longest river in Asia and the third longest in the world after the Nile in Africa and the Amazon in South America.
Traditionally, the upstream part of the Yangtze River refers to the section from Yibin to Yichang; the middle part refers to the section from Yichang to Hukou, where Boyang Lake meets the river; the downstream part is from Hukou to Shanghai.
River cruises of several days duration especially through the beautiful and scenic Three Gorges area are becoming popular as the tourism industry grows in China.

The measured annual water runoff and sediment transport in recent years is correspondingly 82.2% and 29.4% of that measured in the 1950s, 73.9% and 28.6% of that measured in the 1960s, 91.7% and 40.7% of that measured in 1970s and 72.4 and 31.1% of that measured in the 1980s.
Compared with the period before 1990, the annual sediment transport decreases by 27.4% at Gaochang station on the Minjiang river, 69.3% at Beipei station on the Jialing river, 33.6% at Wulong station on the Wujiang river and 23.8% at Yichang station on the main stem of Yangtze.

Twin girl swimmers at the ripe old age of 6 in Wanzhou of Chongqing Municipality have tackled a trek across the Jialing River.
Xiong Yaxian and Xiong Yazhou conquered the river at its Shimenjiang section - where it is about a kilometre wide, the Chongqing Evening News reports.
They are believed to be the youngest swimmers in the city to have beaten the Jialing.

A spokesman of Shapingba Waterworks, one of the largest drinking water suppliers in the city center, told Xinhua that only one of its 10 pipes used to pump water from the Yangtze was still below the water surface and in operation and that is only 10 cm below the water level.
