Kyoto Jidai Matsuri (Festival of Ages) is annually held on October 22.
As one of the three big festivals in Kyoto, along with the Aoi Matsuri and the Gion Matsuri, it is popular among the residents of the city as well as among many people in Japan, and about 150,000 people line the route to view the procession.
In commemoration of the 1100th anniversary of the transfer to the Heian-kyo capital, Heian Shrine was constructed and Jidai Matsuri was instituted as an event on the shrine's ritual calendar.

Our article is devoted to matsuri which began as sacred rituals which focused the wellbeing of the populace, agriculture and the spirituality of the local community.
Other Kyoto festivals are: the Dance Festival in the spring, Jidai Matsuri, in which people parade in period clothing, the Aoi Festival of the Kamo Shrine in mid May, and the Kurama Torch Festival at the Yuki Shrine in October.
In both of these matsuri, floats called yatai are brought out of their individual hangars, yatai-gura, and paraded down the street The yatai, most of which are over twenty feet in height, are ornately decorated and very tall wheeled floats.

Every year on Oct. 22, the city of Kyoto celebrates its long history with the Jidai Matsuri “Festival of the Ages” — a long procession of participants dressed in the various fashions of Japanese history.
The festival was created in 1895 to mark the 1,100 anniversary of the founding of Kyoto as Japan’s imperial capital.

The Jidai Matsuri in essence is a big history lesson, and a pretty potent reminder of what Kyoto is. Tt's also a good example of coercion and political intent.

I haven't been in Kyoto in October, so have never seen their Jidai Matsuri, but I have seen the less well known Tokyo Jidai Matsuri held in Asakusa in early November.
I hope you have all of your accommodations already reserved as Kyoto will be jammed during the Matsuri period and it is ulikely there will be any rooms available for "walk-ins." Have a great time and don't miss the OTHER sites and attractions of Kyoto, one of my favorite cities.
Just a few notes whilst this is fresh in my memory - My parents and I went to Kyoto's Jidai Matsuri (Festival of the Ages) and the Kurama Hi Matsuri (Kurama Fire Festival) on October 22.

Asked about the Jidai Matsuri and picked up a book with info and a route map, some info on textiles places in Kyto, and a flyer with stuff to do around each subway station (didn't get used).
Debated about buying tickets for the Jidai Matsuri, but decided not to.
