Jidaigeki show the lives of the samurai, farmers, craftsmen, and merchants of this time.
Jidaigeki are a parade of people with occupations unfamiliar to modern Japanese, and especially to foreigners.
The term "Jedi" (as in Jedi Knight) from the Star Wars saga was derived from Jidaigeki by George Lucas as he was heavily influenced by Akira Kurosawa.

Jidaigeki: Originally a used to describe films based on Kabuki drama, eventually a term for any period film.
Even the seemingly clear split between jidaigeki and gendaigeki becomes fuzzy when period films take on obvious metaphorical references to contemporary issues and concerns—a phenomenon dubbed as “gendaigeki with samurai topknots.” This term was coined in the 1920s, but is still applicable to recent films like The Twilight Samurai (2002).

 Seven Samurai
Seven Samurai is a film about the modern works, an attempt by moving further back into history, to uncover the dialectic between class and the individual, an effort to confront the social construction of self and to see whether this annihilates the basis for individual heroism.
Kurosawa's intention was to destroy cliches and dead formulas to renew jidaigeki as a film genre that could show the past more accurately and at the same time appeal to the contemporary sensibility of the audience.
On a more universal level, the heroic efforts of the samurai, like those of the bureaucrat in Ikiru, remain unsung.

Here's a few links to start the ball rolling!
One of the things that suprised me was this line from the first link "Even the word "Jedi" was inspired by Lucas hearing the word jidaigeki." Jidaigeki kind of means historical play, period drama/piece, or samurai movie.
