Kurogane’s Anime Blog » Jigoku Shoujo
This episode is about Saki, whose father died in an apparent suicide, but she knows otherwise because the night that he died, Saki saw some incriminating evidence involving the mayor of the city, leading her to suspect that her father’s death was caused by the mayor, Kusunoki.
Also the devious nature of the Jigoku Tsuushin group is revealed here, as whatever it is, they’re not going to interfere in anyways and just act as watchers, seeing how they let Kaoruko lose her voice and then finally letting her become the contractor in the end.
She tries the Jigoku Tsuushin out of desperation and the pervert is nicely dealt with by Enma and her associates.

SaruDama: Jigoku - Hell (Ishii Teruo 1999) - Japanese Movies   (Site not responding. Last check: )
The original is director Nakagawa Nobuo's 1960 Jigoku which is deemed a classic among film aficionados but remains generally unseen by Western audiences.
In Ishii's Jigoku we witness both underworld and earthly scenarios through the eyes of Rika, a young woman graciously granted a vision of hell by the underworld's Lord Emma.
Ishii is clearly presenting Jigoku as a type of social catharsis whereby some sense of justice and retribution against an otherwise senseless social crime might be perceived.

metamovie.de - Jigoku   (Site not responding. Last check: )
Tempted by a "friend" (a devil in disguise), our hero gets caught in a web of moral confusion: chaos ensues, destructive emotions spread, songs, narrative short-cuts, meaningless suffering and ever-growing absurdities finally get us to the point where all protagonists are dead.
However, this part of Jigoku does tend to get overshadowed by its closing third, which is set in hell itself, abounding with no-budget, but beautiful and sometimes very gory set-pieces.
Jigoku remains a true oddity, a visual feast and a warning against eating fish.

 Jigoku
The concept of the afterlife, and more specifically Hell (which is what Jigoku translates to in English and is an alternate title for the film, which is also known as The Sinners Of Hell) is a common one that seems to appear in almost every major religion.
Jigoku manages to remain a fascinating movie regardless of how overdone the subject may be, and despite the fact that the film is over forty years old.
But whereas Marins’ vision of Hell is probably influenced by the Catholic Church and his own bizarre imagination, director Nobuo Nakagawa paints his version of the inferno in colorful hues and fills them with traditional Japanese representations of the demonic.

SciFi Japan » DVD REVIEW: JIGOKU
JIGOKU was one of the last movies produced by Shintoho, the studio formed in the wake of the “Flag of Ten” labor strike at Toho.
JIGOKU was made as Shintoho’s distribution system collapsed and — while it did well in the theaters it played — was given a spotty theatrical release.
JIGOKU was rarely seen in the United States, but in 2004 the Japan Society of New York and the American Cinematheque in Los Angeles screened an English subtitled 35mm print from distributor Kokusai Hoei.

 Midnight Eye review: Jigoku (1960)
Shintoho was formed by a number of prominent stars and directors who left Toho after a series of strikes at the larger company in 1947 (Shintoho means literally, "New Toho").
Many of these pictures starred Jigoku's main protagonist, the elfin Amachi, who later turned up in The Beast and the Magic Sword (El Bestia y la Espade Mágica, 1983), a Japanese co-production with Spanish horror icon Paul Naschy.
In its native land the Nakagawa's Jigoku has been the subject of two remakes - in 1979 by Tatsumi Kumashiro, and a recent release in 1999 from Joys of Torture maverick, Teruo Ishii - though the original has hardly been seen by viewers outside of Japan.

 filmjourney.org : Koroneko, Jigoku
The movie is not a suspense picture, its mixture of realism and outlandish twists of fate makes it a never-ending string of surprises, more a Grand Guignol fl comedy about the human condition than a horror film of dreaded anticipation.
Jigoku, however, is a film more about the theatricality of its horrors and its playfully cruel take on Fate than anything else.
It may not be Dostoevskian in its thematic exploration of guilt, but as a stylish, remarkably original morality tale that manages to balance its sensationalistic terrors with cutting social critique, it's a one-of-a-kind achievement.

The widescreen film was Nakagawa's first color movie, but it would also be the first horror film of its kind produced anywhere in the world.
Jigoku was a phantasmagoric nightmare of unrelenting morbidity, a glimpse of Hell and its eternal torments that must have outraged viewers when it first opened.
It took Nakagawa seven months to shoot Jigoku, and much of the production was funded with his own money.
