Saddam Hussien participated in an unsuccessful attempt by the Baath Party to assassinate Iraq's ruler Abd al Karim Qasim in October 1959.
Between 1964 and 1966 Saddam was put in charge of the Jihaz al Khas (Special Apparatus), codenamed Jihaz al-Haneen (Instrument of Yearning) which concentrated on intelligence and security work.
In 1973 the Jihaz was transformed into the Da'irat al Mukhabarat al Amah (General Intelligence Department or GID) after the failed coup attempt by Director of Internal Security Nazim Kazzar.

This appointment marked a new beginning for the Ba'th in Iraq because Saddam Husain was the architect of Jihaz Haneen and always oversaw its various metamorphoses into the complex and ever-so-secret policing institutions of the second Ba'thi experience.
Saddam Husain had organized Jihaz Haneen from this same membership, and his carefully selected cadres played a role in the coup to become eventually the nucleus of the Mukhabarat, the chief executive organ of Ba'thist policies.

Iraq had nothing to do with 9-11, harboring Al Queda cells who's intention is to plant WMD's somewhere in the US.
Saddam, in the meantime, became head of al-Jihaz a-Khas, the secret intelligence apparatus of the Baath Party.

Algiers came just two years after Massoud went to Washington to meet Richard Helms, the CIA director, and Al Haig, the White House chief of staff a meeting that led to both CIA and Israeli advisers moving into northern Iraq to help the Kurds.
Algiers left the Kurds high and dry, ending a generation of Kurdish revolt led by Massoud's father, Mulla Mustafa, whose broken heart sent him into exile and an early death.

It evolved in 1973 from the Jihaz al Khas secret police, headed by Saddam Hussein between 1964 and 1966.
During the 1980s Iran-Iraq war, it analyzed intelligence on Iran provided by the CIA.
