WHANGANUI MP Jill Pettis has come out swinging after claims government funding is being cut to Wanganui because of a population decrease.
Mrs Pettis said it was mischievous and inaccurate to say Wanganui government funding had been cut.
Mrs Pettis said there was no certainty what the statistics were, even though the Wanganui was showing positive signs of growth.

A heavy defeat for incumbent Jill Pettis, coupled with difficulties nationally, made election night one of the gloomiest in decades for Whanganui Labour.
Mrs Pettis has secured a fifth term in Parliament but faces the disappointment of being a list member and being condemned to Opposition if Labour cannot put a government together.

He was commenting on figures released yesterday by Whanganui MP Jill Pettis that the number of Wanganui people claiming the unemployment benefit for more than two years has dropped by a third, from 553 people in March 2004 to 337 in March this year.
Whanganui MP Jill Pettis said Winz were doing more one-on-one client base management and using the rural and urban employment service to reach people in their homes and help them into jobs.
Higher levels of subsidy will be available to some employers taking on long-term unemployed clients, she said.

Labour's Chief whip Jill Pettis is currently negotiating with National's Deputy leader Gerry Brownlee over who will go where.
Ms Pettis is adamant that she doesn't want to be calling in the movers too often.
