JIM LEHRER: Two other points: Haynes, these words that we just quoted--it’s been widely reported that he didn’t write any of those words, those were not his words at all, that Bill Safire wrote some of them, Pat Buchanan wrote some of them.

The charge of bribe-taking, which forced Agnew's resignation from office, preceded by less than one year President Nixon's own resignation.Spiro Theodore Agnew was born November 9, 1918, in Baltimore, Maryland, to Greek immigrant restaurant owner Theodore S. Anagnostopoulous and a Virginia-born widow named Margaret Akers.
The elder Agnew lost his business during the Depression, but had restored his fortunes by the time his son was ready for high school.
After a few years of legal maneuvers the citizens won their case and Agnew had to reimburse 8,735 to the state coffers.Agnew died of leukemia on September 17, 1996, at the age of 77.

As a child, Jim Agnew loved the sounds his grandfather could squeeze from bagpipes, but never thought he'd follow in those musical footsteps.
"Jim is very dedicated, has a good sense of music and has a good mastering of the instrument," said private instructor Bob Blachley, who has served 11 years as pipe major for the 35-year-old Macdonald Pipe Band.
He noted that Agnew qualified this year to perform in parades and should advance to participate in the solo competition section next year.

Spiro T. Agnew, 39th Vice President of the United States, was born of Greek immigrant parents in Baltimore, Maryland.
Agnew was selected to be Richard M. Nixon's running mate in the 1968 Presidential election, and was viewed as a compromise figure for most Republicans.
Agnew assumed office as Vice-President in 1969, but in 1973, Agnew became the subject of investigation for bribery, extortion, tax fraud, and conspiracy, on charges of having taken kickbacks from government contractors in Maryland while governor.

(Jim) and I live in Walker County, Ga. The John Agnew you are looking for may be the John and Mary who got our farm in the 1832 land lottery or it may be one of his sons.
In the Trinity Methodist Church Cemetery there is a marker with John Agnew b 9-23-1833 d 5-24-1899 on one side and M V Agnew b 10-6-1857 d 2-4-1923 on the other.
Other Agnew names that are not in my line and I have never heard their names in conversation are Ettna May Agnew 12-14-1902 d 7-9-1918; J Harold Agnew b 1-19-1911 d 3-27-1945; C T Agnew 8-3-1870 d 7-4-1938 looks like may have been married to Eula H Agnew b 2-28-1876 d 7-5-1959.

During his years with Brandon and Portland in the WHL, Agnew was named to the WHL's West division First All-Star team and after graduating was assigned by the Canucks to Fredericton of the AHL.
Agnew was the proverbial tough customer, but his game was greatly affected after he suffered a serious knee injury midway through the '89-'90 season in the IHL.
He spent much of the next three years recovering, and the final blow came during an exhibition game on September 14, 1994 when he blew his knee out one final time and was forced to retire.

With the debut of "Oliver!" a musical based on the Charles Dickens novel "Oliver Twist" about an orphan who runs away from the orphanage, only one night away, CHS students were scrambling to get into their costumes and rehearse their lines before the dress rehearsal.
The task is probably somewhat easier for Agnew when he has an experienced actress like Maria Manacheril.
With all of the work that has been put in, Agnew thinks the performers are anxious for opening night.

On October 10, 1973, Spiro "Ted" Agnew became the first U.S. vice president to resign in disgrace.
His resignation was part of an agreement with the Justice Department in which he pleaded no contest to income tax evasion charges stemming from contract kickbacks received while he was governor of Maryland and vice president.
Fined $10,000, Agnew was placed on three years' probation.

I have an interest in history and today found an old bible (1860) encased in fine tooled leather with embossed text on the cover stating that it was presented to Hayes Agnew, a surgeon with the USN (Ithink) volunteers and presented in Philadelphia.
