Gettys joined Digital Equipment Corporation in 1983 to work on Project Athena, a joint experiment of MIT, Digital, and IBM for the educational use of computers in undergraduate education.
Via the Internet, Gettys coordinated the development efforts of contributors both inside and outside Digital of the X Windows System, one of the first major software systems to be built in a distributed, collaborative fashion.
Prior to joining Digital, Gettys worked for The Institute for Advanced Study, and The Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, where he worked on such projects as the development of the infrared telescope for Space Lab II.

Jim Gettys is a senior consultant engineer for Compaq Computer Corpora-tion's Industry Standards and Consortia Group and a visiting scientist at the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) at M.I.T. He is the chair of the HTTP/NG Protocol Design Working Group of W3C.
Gettys argued that caching would be more effective if it also occurred in the middle of the Net; the closer a cache is to the server, the more of that server's load the cache can offload.
Gettys pointed out that the explosion of wireless devices means that bandwidth will still be a concern for the foreseeable future, as these devices often have less bandwidth than today's dial-up modems.

Jim Gettys has released a roadmap for the open source desktop and palmtop.
The roadmap is an attempt to create a "sketch of the names and relationships of these technologies and projects, and a glimpse into their status and development," according to Gettys.
Gettys founded (with Bob Scheifler) the X windowing system and edited the final specification for HTML 1.1, but has worked more recently on the handhelds.org and Gnome projects.

Jim was happy to see that we're finally getting innovating desktops for X (Gnome and KDE), as in his mind all innovation stopped after CDE.
Jim then showed a great video that was 7 year old and demonstrated a huge and very impressive hack where dragon dictate was running on dos with a gateway that would send the output to a Unix machine and actually let someone work on X without using a keyboard at all.

I just wanted to chime in to say that I think Jim's been a terrific asset to the board this year.
He's been a voice of reason at all times and a big advocate for (1) looking at the bigger picture of where computing is going, (2) worrying about sound process, and (3) interoperability with other desktop environments.

Gettys explained to internetnews.com that, in his opinion, a number of other events and decisions were made without proper community consultation.
Gettys said the newly formed X.Org Foundation is different than its immediate predecessor, the X.Org consortium.
The consortium was an industry based organization, whereas the Foundation is an open membership organization that allows membership and a voice in governance to any that have contributed to development.
