Though initially known for being 'straight-laced', Gordon began to use heroin and cocaine heavily during the short, drug-fueled career of the Dominos.
He was tried for the killing and, because of changes to the insanity defense in California, he was convicted of second-degree murder in 1984 and sentenced to serve sixteen years to life in prison.

Not only that, but it was Jim Gordon that created and wrote the actual music and piano solo for the song, and, even though drums are his primary instrument he played the original piano solo on Layla.
I don't know the exact details of what happened to Jim Gordon but I know that he is in an asylum, a mental institution.
