Jim Hall was the seventh American to receive The JAZZPAR Prize (so far the two non-American had been the Englishmen Django Bates in 97 and Tony Coe in 95).
Jim Hall became keenly aware of the possible variations with instrumental combinations in small jazz groups as early as 57 in saxophonist Jimmy Giuffre's trio.
Jim Hall's discography is long and impressive and he has played numerous clubs, festivals and concert stages throughout the world.

Guitarist Jim Hall was born in 1930 in Cleveland, Ohio, where he began to play professionally while still a teenager.
Hall began playing with Chico Hamilton's quintet shortly after arriving on the west coast, but it was a three-year stint with the Jimmy Giuffre Three, beginning in 1956, that shaped his life-long preference for working in duos and trios, which emphasized improvisational musical dialog among the members.
Jim Hall's creative output over the intervening years has continued to emphasize improvisation in duos and trios, as well as challenging arrangements for larger forces.

While this statement was made with reference to "The Jim Hall Quartet featuring Tom Harrell" (Denon, 1988), it is interesting to note that Jim looks upon his experience with Sonny Rollins back in 1961 as a turning point in his career.

When jazz guitar veteran Jim Hall entered Rudy Van Gelder's New Jersey studio in April of 1975, little did he realize that some 29 years later the album he was about to record would be given the full-monty Ultradisc UHR Gain 2 hybrid SACD treatment from Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs.
Joining Hall at the session were alto saxophonist Paul Desmond, trumpeter Chet Baker, pianist Sir Roland Hanna (one of the fine unsung pianists that dot jazz history), bassist Ron Carter,and drummer Steve Gadd (whose name was just beginning to appear on both jazz and rock albums).
The piano is clearly rendered if still a bit too boxy-sounding, while the rhythm section, and Hall, are clustered between two speakers in a fat-mono sort of arrangement.

Hall received 17 stitches in his head and had to cancel a few gigs, but all in all, he is OK. This, like most accidents, was an unexpected and life altering event for this talented man. So please, for Jim’s sake, watch where you’re driving, folks.
