Nine months before Jim Henson's death in May 16, 1990, he was negotiating the sale of his company to The Walt Disney Company for a reported $150 million.
On March 15, 2005, The Jim Henson Company annouced that they are celebrating the 50th anniversary of the company with a number of events, starting with screenings of The Dark Crystal and Labyrinth on April 23 at the Newport Beach Film Festival.

Henson said he was gratified by the success of Henson Co's most recent TV movie, "It's a Very Merry Muppet Christmas Movie," which racked up solid ratings for NBC in December.
In fact, Henson said he expected the company to be snapped up soon after the NBC picture proved that the Muppets still had appeal to kids and parents.

Jim Henson's Creature Shop, the London-based visual effects and animatronics division, has been shut down with the loss of over 20 jobs.
A statement from the Henson's US HQ said that its TV and film projects would not be affected and that the Creature Shop would continue to service third-party clients out of its LA and New York locations, as well as hiring crews in London on a project-by-project basis.
The sale saw all five Henson family members joining the JHC board, but only Jim's son Brian and daughter Lisa are actively involved in the company's management.
