However, the August 1986 signing of quarterback Jim Kelly was clearly the catalyst for the resurrection of a Bills franchise which hit the depths of despair with consecutive 2-14 seasons in 1984 and 1985.
Jim Kelly reveled in his reputation as "a quarterback with a linebacker mentality" but all his on-field toughness could not mask his soft spot for children.
Kelly won many games with his arm, but it was his spirit which drove him and his teammates to heights unimaginable to Bills fans of the early 1980s.

Kelly was drafted by the Buffalo Bills out of the University of Miami, where he had played an important role in helping build the University of Miami into one of the nation's premier collegiate football programs.
Kelly devoted much of his post-football life to his son, Hunter, who was diagnosed with Krabbe Leukodystrophy (Krabbe disease) and died because of it on August 5, 2005 at the age of eight.
Kelly and his wife, Jill, founded the annual Hunter's Day of Hope, which is held every year on February 14, which is the birthday of both Jim and Hunter Kelly.
