As singer in the 70's band Slade, frontman Noddy and his less exotically monickered chums Jim, Dave and Don lived a life of parties and travel, fans and fun.
With all the big hits co-written by band members Noddy Holder and Jim Lea, and with an impressive melodic gift accompanied by classic songwriting, they were the new Beatles.
Originally a heavy metal act cut in the mould of Deep Purple, the band moved towards a more nightclub-friendly Top 40 direction in 1972, following a split which left the McGinlays alone.
