Fates Warning - Island in the Stream (Sea Of Tranquility - Jim Matheos Interview)
Jim Matheos: Boy, that was a tough decision trying to figure out what the hell to do for that, because it was an opening slot and it was questionable what kind of crowd we'd have.
Jim Matheos: Well, of the seven songs, two are instrumentals, two of the others I wrote the lyrics for, two Ray wrote the lyrics for, and one we collaborated on.
Jim Matheos: Well, mainly, I didn't do any press for A Pleasant Shade of Gray And there were two reasons for that: one was that I didn't want to have to explain the record, and two, it had been so long where the majority, if not all, of the press was being done by myself.

Matheos formed Fates Warning as a stright-up metal band, but gradually the group took on a prog-rock direction.
Matheos is a technically precise player and a complex individual, as demonstrated on the 1997 release Pleasant Shade of Gray: the title -- indeed, the only -- song is an hour long magnum opus of intricately woven time changes and mystifying chord patterns.
Jim matheos is one of the best songwriters of the world and I'm glad to see him in that list.

JIM MATHEOS - "Eclectic Earwig Reviews Music and More for You!"
In addition to Matheos on the guitar, the rest of the band consists of Michael Manning on the bass, Mark Zander playing the drums (barely), and most noticably Charlie Bisharat handling the violin duties.
Matheos' style here is very reminiscient of Anthony Phillips' "Private Parts & Pieces" series - just a lush arrangement of 12-strings that is guaranteed to patch a line directly into your soul and totally de-stress your psyche.
It's a shame that Matheos decided to make the sound he successfully engineered in "Piscataquog" the exception on the CD rather than the rule.

Transcending the Mundane: Interview with O.S.I.
When the news that a new prog “supergroup” was forming consisting of the monumental talents of Fate’s Warning’s Jim Matheos, Dream Theater’s Mike Portnoy, DT alumni and Chroma Key mastermind Kevin Moore and Pain of Salvation frontman Daniel Gildenlow there was an electric sense of anticipation for what was to come.
Jim: I think it was tough for him, he’s used to being in control and doing things the way he wants but I think to his credit he took direction and he had a hard time with some of it but I think he’s happy with the end result.
Jim: I’m a bit leary of it myself, I don’t like to approach political subjects from a lyrical point of view when I write lyrics.

A few years ago I had heard that Jim Matheos had released a solo album, and being a long time follower of his full-time gig with Fates Warning (a progressive heavy metal band), I had to find the cd.
Jim is an excellent guitarist who decides to make an album that is quite different than what you'd hear from Fates Warning.

Guitarist, composer, arranger and producer Jim Matheos is well-known to progressive rock fans as the founder-leader of Fates Warning, but now he is beginning to capture another audience with his softer side as he releases his second, acoustic, all-instrumental, solo album, appropriately-titled Awav With Words..
A self-taught musician, he wrote out sheet music for the main violin and bass parts before calling his guest musicians, but then encouraged them to bring their own personalities and styles to the project which included improvising all of their solos.
Matheos was born in Connecticut and raised in Massachusetts ("I love New England").

DPRP Specials : Jim Matheos - Fates Warning : Interview 2005
Interviews are almost as hard to come by — with the main song-writer Jim Matheos even refusing to do any press for their best known album, 1997’s ‘A Pleasant Shade of Grey’.
As for the future, Matheos' immediate priority is the writing of the second OSI (Office of Strategic Influence) album with Chroma Key and ex-Dream Theater keyboardist Kevin Moore.
Matheos is absolutely certain that his future lies with being a musician, however his tone of voice and body language, suggest someone who is maybe looking for a fresh challenge - maybe a little jaded with the constant circus of writing, recording, interviews and tours.

As it happened, Matheos decided two days before my flight over to New York that he would have Kevin do all the vocals instead, since we had so different styles.
Matheos liked what I did, but simply, and unfortunately for me, wanted to take the project in a slightly different direction than he first intended.

While Matheos is no Michael Hedges (an obvious influence here), he does establish himself as a fine acoustic guitarist in the same tradition of William Ackerman and other Windham Hill artists.
When the time comes for Jim to hang up his electric guitar with Fates Warning, it is hoped that he returns to this style.
This is a very reflective listen and a major stamp of credibility to a musician who has remained committed and focused on his musical goals.

What the title does not imply is that, basically, it's an acoustic album that has a whole lot more violin than guitar on it.

Matheos explains the albums' impetus simply, "We just keep trying todo different things to keep our fans and ourselves interested." Having just come off the critical success of his side project ENGINE, Ray entered the recording process with a different frame of mind.
Helping the band create the vision in the studio, Matheos again enlistedthe assistance of former Dream Theater keyboardist Kevin Moore, and FATES hired gun bassist Joey Vera who will once again join the band on any live outings.

Pain Of Salvation lead vocalist/guitarist Daniel Gildenloew has unexpectedly been ousted from the as-yet-unnamed progressive rock supergroup of drummer Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater), guitarist Jim Matheos (Fates Warning), keyboardist Kevin Moore (Chroma Key, Dream Theater), and bassist Sean Malone (Gordian Knot, Cynic).
He asked me if I would want to be part of a project together with him and Mike Portnoy, and after hearing the material I said yes," explains Gildenloew in the band's newletter.
At this point, it's uncertain what really prompted Matheos to choose Moore's vocals over Gildenloew's, but it's comforting to see the frontman reacting calmly and professionally, when most of the time, similar events spark controversy (Arjen vs. Bruce, anyone?) and ultimately, both parties appear immature.

What is even more interesting is that, if I'm reading the liner notes correctly, the band didn't record their tracks together.
