Messina's career began at the age of 17 when a deejay heard him and asked him to produce two albums.
Messina had already made a name for himself in the music business and began touring with Loggins until he too made a name for himself.
Messina tours and performs new songs on a regular basis; the recent album River North is all new material but still features Messina's signature country-rock sound.

Corporate Entertainment - Jim Messina booking information
Jim began learning guitar at the age of 5 and as he got older was attracted in particular to the guitar parts and sounds in early Elvis Presley and Ricky Nelson records.
When Jim was only 17 and a senior in high school, he was asked by a local deejay who had heard him play, to assemble a band and produce albums on two new artists the man was working with.
Jim became an integral part of Loggins' debut, Sittin' In, and felt a desire to join the newcomer on his first tour until Loggins was firmly and confidently established.

Jim: I think the biggest challenge for me was…and by the way Kenny and I had never played more then an hour and half on stage together and this was a three hour show with a 20 minute intermission.
Jim: Yeah, and once it was finished it looked to new, so had to study the old stuff to kind of match it.
Jim: Yes, I didn’t realize it at the time but apparently [Kenny] was going through a really rough time emotionally and physically over the change in his life as he was going through a divorce.

Kenny Loggins and Jim Messina were the most successful pop/rock duo of the first half of the '70s.
Messina agreed to produce Loggins' first album, but somewhere along the way it became a duo effort that was released in 1972 under the title Kenny Loggins with Jim Messina Sittin' In.
Loggins & Messina split for two solo careers by the end of that year, their early catalog completed by a greatest-hits album, Best of Friends, and a live record, Finale.

Sittin' In - Kenny Loggins & Jim Messina, Music Downloads - Online
Review: This debut album was credited to Kenny Loggins with Jim Messina because the project had begun as a solo record by Loggins being produced by Messina.
By the time it was finished, however, Messina had written or co-written six of the 11 songs, contributed "first guitar," and shared lead vocals on many tracks.
Messina's "Nobody but You" and "Vahevala," co-written by Loggins' second cousin, Dave Loggins, were the singles chart entries, but today everybody remembers the album for Loggins' "House at Pooh Corner," which had earned Loggins his record contract, and "Danny's Song," which Anne Murray took into the Top Ten the following year.

 Poco/Loggins & Messina
Messina quit within two years and went on to huge commercial success in a partnership with Kenny Loggins, but Furay kept the act together and put out a couple of decent records before quitting himself in 1973.
But Messina was a smart enough producer to also emulate contemporary pop, adding Elton John-style piano and horns to Loggin's more up-tempo numbers ("Back To Georgia"; "Rock 'N' Roll Mood") and glorying in sophisticated harmonies, modulations, and melodic hooks.
Messina wrote most of the tunes, but there are a couple collaborations like the record's hit single, "My Music" (a good-timey 50's rock 'n' roll number with swinging horns and even a doo-wop vocal break).

SurfGuitar101 - Jim Messina and His Jesters: "Dragsters"
The original Jesters LP was released sometime in '64 and was credited to "Jim Messina and his Jesters" (notice the copy of "Dick Dale and HIS Del-tones") and it was called The Dragsters.
Messina's guitar work is truly exceptional, sounding like DD's flashier doppleganger, with a lot of nimble fingerwork full of fast hammer-ons and pull-offs, and not as much double-picking as you may expect.
I suspect that Messina couldn't give a crap about surf music by '73, and anyway, the sound quality and the recording is very authentic: it SOUNDS like a cheap early- to mid-sixties recording, for better or worse.
