The building was dedicated November 23, 1949 and proclaimed the JIM NANCE McCORD HALL May 30, 1958.
Jim N. McCord was born in Unionville, Bedford County, Tennessee.

James S. "Jim" Nance (December 30, 1942 - June 16, 1992) was a fullback with the Boston Patriots during their days in the American Football League.
After starting for three years at Syracuse University, Nance joined the Patriots in 1965.
Though his rookie season was unimpressive, he led the AFL in rushing the next two seasons, gaining 1458 yards in 1966 and winning the AFL's MVP award.

Jim Nance, a highly regarded professor in the Kinesiology and Health Promotion Department of the College of Education, was named the 2001 recipient of the W. Walter H. Mustaine Award, the highest honor awarded by the Kentucky Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (KAHPERD).
He was president of the organization from 1982-83, chair of the Research Section from 1981-82 and served as vice president of the general division and athletics.
In 1997, KAHPERD presented Nance with the Physical Educator of the Year award and, in 1984, was honored with a Distinguished Service Award.

The powerful, 6-foot-1 Nance played at 235 pounds in college, but he weighed nearly 260 pounds when he joined the Boston Patriots of the American Football League in 1965 and he never really got into season that season.
At 240 pounds in 1966, Nance led the AFL in rushing with 1,458 yards on 299 carries, both all-time league records, and scored 11 rushing touchdowns.
