Cambridgeshire MP Jim Paice has unveiled the Tories' manifesto for farming with a pledge to ban the commercial planting of genetically modified crops until there is clear proof they are safe.
The Cambridgeshire South East MP also promised a ban on any commercial planting of GM crops until or unless science shows this would be safe and until or unless issues of liability and crop segregation are resolved.
Mr Paice promised legislation to reform food labelling so consumers are given clear information about the country of origin of the major ingredients and whether it meets the standards required of British farmers.

SOHAM MP Jim Paice has spoken of his shock over the theft of documents relating to Maxine Carr's release from prison.
Mr Paice, Conservative MP for South East Cambridgeshire, said the theft was "beyond belief" and called for a full investigation.

The Tenant Farmers Association's Annual General Meeting in London on Tuesday February 22 was told that the rules on country of origin labelling of food were causing UK consumers to be deceived.
The comments came from Jim Paice MP, Shadow Minister of Agriculture for the Conservative Party, in response to the "Farming Industry Marketing Strategy" report commissioned jointly by the TFA and National Beef Association (NBA) and published in early February.

In a reply to questions asked by Cllr Chris Watt via Shadow Agriculture Minister Jim Paice MP, The Minister responsible admits that DEFRA have not approved any “other ways” at all, making his answer of Feb 2004 a nonsense.
In a further twist BandNES trading standards officers are known to have written to DEFRA saying that they cannot confidently enforce DEFRA’s interpretation of the regulations further pointing out that a “covered space” could be a bucket with a lid on.
It is also a great shame that our MPs do not scrutinise the regulations they pass.
