Scancarelli: That used to be the kiss of death.
Scancarelli: I remember when I was a kid, you could pick up newspapers around the country and instead of having one page as being a comics section, they would have a strip to a page, so you would go through the paper seeing a funny at different points.
Scancarelli: A friend of mine here in town, George Breisacher, got to write and draw Mutt and Jeff, and the syndicate gave him no instruction on it: who was the short one, who was the tall one, nothing.

The Kilocycle Kowboys - Choice Hillbilly Music
Banjo picker Jim Whitley and bassist Darrell Gray met in the Thomasboro neighborhood of West Charlotte when they were in high school in the early sixties; they discovered their mutual interest in Bluegrass music and started learning to play that virtuoso form of country music with another school friend, Mark Wingate.
That band was breaking apart when in about 1972, Jim Scancarelli received a phone call from someone looking for a band for a square dance.
Jim was, and is, a student of hillbilly music as a part of broadcasting history; he’s fascinated by the many string bands who appeared on radio stations throughout rural areas of the country from the twenties through the early fifties.

 Remember Cliffside | Model
1980s, artist Jim Scancarelli, inspired by several visits to our town over the preceding 20 years, built a model of an imaginary town called “Cliffside.” Drawing a little on his memory of the real Cliffside, and a lot on his fertile imagination, Jim spent a good portion of four years on the model.
As he would think of new features to add, he built them in separate pieces, so it is not one massive model, but a series of unattached “dioramas,” as he calls them.
Jim is now a nationally-known cartoonist; he draws the comic strip “Gasoline Alley” that may appear in your local newspaper.
