Steranko earned lasting acclaim for his innovations in sequential art during the Silver Age of comic books, particularly his infusion of surrealism and op art into the medium.
Steranko was unable to produce comics work that met his own standards at a pace sufficient to sustain himself economically.
Steranko's youthful career as an escape artist has been said to be an inspiration for the Jack Kirby character Mister Miracle, as well as Joe Kavalier in the novel The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay.

Steranko later in the same issue begins to dip into new techniques when the Yellow Claw kills some SHIELD commandos with his "hyper-psionic brain-wave emanations." The story climaxes in Strange Tales 167, published in January 1968.
Steranko made his final bow with No. 5, which included a Senator Irksome, drawn to look like Sen. Everett Dirksen of Illinois and a mysterious character drawn like Sidney Greenstreet who is helping Fury with some personal search.

James Steranko was born November 5, 1938 in Reading, PA. His early interest was in magic, and while in his teens spent summers with circuses and carnivals working as a sideshow magician and escape artist.
Steranko emphasized the series' sci-fi aspects, employing an amazing variety of graphic tricks including unusual points of view, moire screens and Benday dots, and completely reorganizing the composition of frames on the page.
Steranko's reputation was built on less than 30 comics stories; his Nick Fury work, a couple of issues of "Captain America" and "X-Men", and a short story in "Tower of Shadows" among others.

But the development of Steranko's signature style as an artist became THE reason for bothering with a comic that was, in many regards, the bottom of the line at Marvel.
But as much as we admire Steranko's use of fine, defined ink line we also need to pay attention to his use of pacing, which is undeniably cinematic.
Steranko's style is very cinematic and I would not be surprised if many moviemakers of today did not read these stories in their youth.

Easily one of the top five most influential comic creators of all time, what Steranko brought to the medium can only be called monumental.
I wish they could have gotten Steranko to do a new cover for this book or at least use the only cover (that I can think of) that they forgot to put in here, "Nick Fury vs. S.H.I.E.L.D." #1, but I guess beggars can't be choosers.
Steranko's "Captain America" issues are quite possibly the best Cap stories ever, and that is a lot of competition he's up against.

CHANDLER was the Manhattan private detective hero of comic-meister supreme Jim Steranko's hommage to the hardboiled private eye heroes created by Hammett, Whitfield, Gardner, Williams and of course, Chandler himself.
The latest news, courtesy of Steranko fan Tony Robertson, is that Dark Horse Comics will be publishing a revised version of Red Tide in December 1999.
Steranko is revamping the art and text to make it more hardboiled, as he felt he was restricted by the publisher in the original edition.

I actually attended the event more for Michael Chabon than Jim Steranko, but I've been a big comicbook fan since the mid-70s (I really miss the Perez Avengers and Claremont/Cockrum X-Men from those days), so it was also a great chance to see a legend like Jim Steranko.
Both felt very honored to share the stage with each other and it was easy to see the creative energy as they discussed their lives and their work.
I wish I could have stayed to say hi to Steranko and have him sign his new book, but with a pregnant wife and a two-year old at home with the power out, I had to leave after Chabon signed the book.

 Industry News: Jim Steranko to appear in New York City
Now, comics and film legend Jim Steranko will be appearing at the September Big Apple convention in New York City along with Vanguard publisher J. David Spurlock.
The two will appear in support of their benefit project for the children of 9-11 victims - a scholarship fund raised through sales of Steranko's powerful limited-edition print, The Spirit of America.
