Watts was born to Charles Richard Watts, a lorry driver, and his wife Lillian Charlotte Watts at University College Hospital, London, England and raised in Islington, a London borough.
During the four decades of performing with the Rolling Stones, Watts has proven to be one of the most influential drummers in popular music despite his modesty; he is a gifted and powerful drummer, often cited by many younger drummers as a seminal influence on their own style.
In June 2004, Watts was diagnosed with throat cancer, and underwent a course of radiotherapy.

When Jim Watts purchased a 40-acre property in Deschuts County, Oregon in 1986 for $42,500, he thought he was making a sound investment in the future.
Unbeknownst to him, the county had changed the regulations the year before to prohibit any building on private property zoned as "forest." Leaving aside the fact that Jim's property did not have a forest on it, the county assured him prior to the purchase that there would not be a problem in developing the land.
Jim says things have been tough for him because his age, back injury and the loss of a right hand in another accident has made it very difficult to find a decent job.

Charlie Watts, Rolling Stones drummer has been told he has throat cancer.
Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts is being treated for throat cancer, a spokesman for the band said Saturday Watts, 63, was diagnosed in June and has completed four weeks of a six-week course of radiotherapy at London's Royal Marsden Hospital.
He said Watt's treatment had not interfered with any tour or recording plans for the Stones, who have been "relaxing between work commitments" following a world tour last year.
