Whittaker, in November, 1942, was sent to the northern end of the construction at Thanbyuzayat in Burma where the prisoners were working south on the line.
Whittaker had the kind of malaria that would recur about every 10 days, and when he was sent out to work on the railroad, he was soon sent back to Thanbyuzayat to stay in a hospital.

Jim developed a fear of and taste for exposure as a young man. Introduced to climbing through family friends, Jim learned valuable early lessons about objective danger- dangers that exist outside of one's self: rockslides, avalanches, lightning.
Jim had a chance to sign on, and in addition to managing the place, he could sweep, stock and sell as well.
After their first attempt in the Spring of 1975 was repulsed by poor weather and hampered by divisive relationships, Jim and his wife, Dianne, returned to K2 in the summer of 1978 to finish what they had begun four years earlier.

Whittaker earned renown by topping the 29,035-foot peak 10 years after New Zealander Sir Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay became the first visitors to the summit in 1953.
