Born James Houston Davis in Beech Springs, LA, on September 11, 1899 (he would later report it as 1902, then switch back to the earlier date), Davis was the son of a poor sharecropper, but nevertheless he earned a bachelor's degree from Louisiana College Pineville and in 1927 a masters degree from Louisiana State University.
Davis moved back to full-time recording in 1948, and after a stint with Capitol, he returned to Decca.

Outside Louisiana, Jimmie Davis is best known for his original version of "You Are My Sunshine," one of America's theme songs.
A pioneer of country recording, Gov. Davis (as Louisianans still call him) is now 98, and he celebrated his birthday at the Strand Theater in Shreveport, riding his tour bus out from his opulent home in the shadow of the Baton Rouge state capitol.
For the occasion, he was joined by the cast of the Louisiana Hayride, the radio show that once rivaled the Grand Ole Opry and gave early national exposure to both Hank Williams and Elvis Presley, and a special guest concert by Merle Haggard.

However, it was a later 1927 record that really set off the Rodgers phenomenon - "Blue yodel" (or "T. for Texas") was a blues with a yodel & an inspiration to many blues songs & singers from then on (including Tampa Red’s "Bessemer blues").

But fewer are aware of the backwater electric country blues traditions that Davis' music sprang from, and which are starkly in evidence here, on the soundtrack to the 1947 bio-pic that starred Davis as himself.
Working directly with Governor Davis and his authorized biographer, Kevin Fontenot of Tulane University, we unearthed a trove of photos and memorabilia, combined them with Davis' own recollections of the period and the film, and lovingly remastered all the studio tracks cut in support of the movie, none of which have been released commercially.
