Jimmie Lunceford - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
James Melvin "Jimmie" Lunceford (June 6, 1902–July 12, 1947) was an American jazz alto saxophonist and bandleader of the swing era.
Lunceford's orchestra, with their tight musicianship and often outrageous humor in their music and lyrics made an ideal band for the club, and Lunceford's reputation began to steadily grow.
Despite the band's comic veneer, Lunceford always maintained professionalism in the music befitting a former teacher; this professionalism paid off and during the apex of swing in the 1930s, the Orchestra was considered the equal of Duke Ellington's and Count Basie's.

Big Band Music Biography - Jimmie Lunceford
Jimmie Lunceford will long be remembered as the leader of a swinging big band that rivaled on record, and exceeded in person, the orchestras of Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman and Count Basie.
Lunceford himself wanted for nothing and was reputed to have a lavish lifestyle which was readily apparent to all of his sidemen.
Nevertheless, Jimmie Lunceford was still a popular bandleader in 1947 when he suddenly collapsed and died while signing autographs after an engagement in Oregon.

PBS - JAZZ A Film By Ken Burns: Selected Artist Biography - Jimmie Lunceford
Jimmie Lunceford learned several instruments as a child in Denver, where he played alto saxophone in the band led by the violinist George Morrison.
Unlike many big bands of the 1930s, Lunceford's group was noted less for its soloists than for its ensemble work, particularly its distinctive two-beat swing at medium tempo.
The band drew its early style partly from Alphonso Trent and from the Casa Loma Orchestra, as is most apparent in the crude, insistent riff patterns in the "hot" recordings of 1934.

BBC - Radio 3 Jazz Profiles - Jimmie Lunceford
Lunceford's band was one of the finest orchestras of the swing era, its well-drilled sound and the precision of its section playing being unrivalled by any other group.
Lunceford's disciplinarian style began when he was a schoolteacher in Memphis, and put together a band from among his students and his former classmates at Fisk University where he had studied music.
Despite a high turnover of personnel, Lunceford kept a fine band together until his death, and his public were often unaware of the rapidly changing sidemen, as he insisted his soloists learned their solos from the band's discs, many of which were miniature masterpieces.

Jimmie Lunceford dance orchestra at The Bungalow, Seaside Oregon
For a decade-an-a-half, Jimmie Lunceford led one of the most dynamic and innovative dance orchestras of the country.
Nationwide radio broadcasts from the Club resulted in nationwide hits and tours, and between 1934 and 1942, Jimmie Lunceford’s Harlem Express was regarded als the only danceband that could compete, both artistically and financially, with Ellington and Count Basie.
That Saturday, the Jimmie Lunceford Orchestra was scheduled to play The Bungalow, an old wooden skating rink that served as a dancehall in the weekends.

Lunceford's band had an immediately recognizable sound by 1934 and, despite the presence of such top soloists as altoist Willie Smith, tenor-saxophonist Joe Thomas and high-note trumpeter Tommy Stevenson, it was its arranged ensembles (particularly those of Sy Oliver) that gave the orchestra its musical...

Whatever - in the 1930s his outfit was both enormously popular with audiences and admired by musicians and critics.
In 1939, Lunceford made the switch from Decca to Columbia, remaining ‘til 1940, from whence these recordings came.

Lunceford’s ensemble was at its peak in the mid— to late—’30s before the great arranger Sy Oliver left to join the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra.
But even though Oliver and a number of Lunceford’s principal soloists were gone, he had enough ammunition left to put on a good show, and the band was always well—rehearsed and extremely agile.
In other words, the sound is less than admirable but it is Lunceford, and there are those who are willing to trade such shortcomings for another chance to hear again one of the Swing Era’s most widely acclaimed orchestras.

His orchestra lacked any really classic soloists (altoist Willie Smith and trombonist Trummy Young came the closest) and a large portion of the band's repertoire either featured the dated vocals of Dan Grissom or were pleasant novelties.
And yet, the well-rehearsed ensembles were very impressive, some of the arrangements (particularly those of Sy Oliver) were quite original and the use of glee-club vocalists and short concise solos were pleasing and often memorable.
Plus Lunceford's was the first orchestra to feature high-note trumpeters (starting with Tommy Stevenson in 1934) and had a strong influe...
