saw the grandmothers in grand rapids, michigan a couple years back although only jimmy carl fl was among the former mothers in the band and his comment at the time about the breakup was "oh well' things happen." he seemed a nice guy but did appreciate not being bombarded with zappa questions.
i have seen jimmy carl fl on september 24 1999 in karlsruhe at the harmonie with their band farrell and fl.

Black went from backing up bumping and grinding to playing at Royal Festival Hall in a few years, but was dumped back out on the street when Zappa decided to disband his original group of Mothers and embark on a solo career in 1970.
In 1991, Black and Preston were both invited to perform at the Moers Jazz Festival in a 12-piece grouping of musicians from different genres organized by guitarist Eugene Chadbourne.
Black began getting enough work in Europe to survive as a musician, backing up a variety of blues singers in a band led by guitarist and harmonica player Rick Farrell and also appearing from 1994 onward as a guest vocalist with the British band the Muffin Men.

A year later she married Carl Black and moved to the small town of Anthony, where Jimmy spent the bulk of childhood and the entirety of his teen years.
Early in the 80s Black re-united with some of his fellow former Mothers to create The Grandmothers, a group that performed both original material and songs from their Zappa years.

Geronimo Black was formed in late 1969 in Los Angeles, California and was named after Jimmy Carl Black`s youngest son.
Frustrated with this move by the record company, Jimmy decided to move back to Texas, and before leaving, recorded cuts 1,3, and 6 in Sound City Studios in Van Ness, Calif. Track 5 is a live recording from San Miguel, NM.
Jimmy always wanted to put this recording out on CD format and is currently affliated with Stormy Monday Records, so he ask Alf List if they were interested in doing the project.

After moving to California in 1964, Black had a chance encounter with bassist Roy Estrada while trading in some cymbals at a pawn shop; shortly thereafter the two formed The Soul Giants, an RandB combo that was eventually augmented by singer Ray Collins.
Black himself became known to audiences as 'the Indian of the group' - a fact he announced from time to time on We're Only In It For The Money.
Black also formed the RandB outfit Jimmy Carl Black and The Mannish Boys around this time, before once again resurrecting The Grandmothers at the close of the decade.

On the lion's share of the CD's tracks, Black is backed up on various songs from a repertoire he has slowly been building up in his various activities with bands such as the Grandmothers, the Muffin Men, and so forth.
It is good music, but simply not as enjoyable as the Black vocal repertoire, a span that covers authentic blues, goofy Zappa, and vintage psychedelia.

The original Geronimo Black of the early ´70´s was named after him when he was only 2 years old and so he said to me; Dad, I want my name back for the new band he has with my 43 year old son, James D. Black, who is the drummer.
The first TV show was in Washington, DC and we played “Who Are The Brain Police” and really freaked out the audience as Carl Franzoni was touring with us.
The song is on a CD I did with The Jack and Jim Show called “The Early Years” and recently on a CD called “Mercedes Benz” with a band called JCB and the X-tra Combo.
