Carruthers Carruthers is a placeneme in Dumfriesshire which is said to derive from the Brittonic word "caer" meaning "fort" (as in Caerlaverock castle, not far away) and the personal name Ruther (originally Rhythr or Rydderch).
Nigel de Karruthers became Rector at nearby Ruthwell and rose to become Canon of Glasgow Cathedral in 1351 and was chancellor to Robert, Steward of Scotland (progenitor of the Stewart monarchs).
Carruthers is a member of the Armigerous Clans and Families of Scotland ie it has a recognised coat of arms.

Jimmy Carruthers, of Australia, world bantamweight champion, successfully defended his title against Chamrern Songkitrat, of Thailand, on May 2 at Bangkok, Thai., before a crowd of 69,792, which paid $217,000.
Shortly after, Carruthers, who had been undefeated during his professional career, announced his retirement from the ring and left the title vacant.
The World Regulating Championship committee then selected Robert Cohen, of France, and Songkitrat to fight for the crown, the winner to defend it against the winner of an elimination bout between Raton Macias, of Mexico, and Nate Brooks, of the United States.
