Cliff moved to Kingston in 1962 to pursue a career in music.
In 1964 Cliff joined Byron Lee and the Dragonaires as their vocalist on a tour organized by local politician Edward Seaga to promote the Jamaica with its the popular Ska music.
Cliff returned to Jamaica at the end of 1969 and recorded Many Rivers to Cross, which inspired Jamaican filmmaker Percy Henzell to offer him the lead role as a gun toting, drug selling rude boy in the 1970s cult classic, The Harder They Come.

Jimmy Cliff, real name James Chambers (born April 1, 1948, in St Catherine, Jamaica) is a Jamaican reggae musician, best known among mainstream audiences for songs like "Many Rivers to Cross" from The Harder They Come, a film soundtrack which helped break reggae into markets across the world.
Cliff's career took off after his "Hurricane Hattie" became a hit; it was produced by Leslie Kong, with whom Cliff would remain until Kong's death.
In 1964 (see 1964 in music), Cliff was chosen as one of the Jamaican representatives at the World's Fair, and Cliff soon signed to Island Records and moved to Britain.

The Harder They Come tells the story of Ivanhoe Martin (played by Jimmy Cliff), a country boy who moves to Kingston to seek fame and fortune.

I'm a the whitest Cliff fan ever, I've only followed Jimmy since 1982, Raggae Nights, was what turned me onto Jimmy and now I own 7 cd's and one album,"The Power and The Glory" in another life I am sure I was Jamaican.
