I can't do much in the way of giving Al Pitrelli his props, but as luck and timing would have it, I spent about 45 minutes on the phone with Jimmy DeGrasso recently, and what I got out of it is a pretty killer interview.
Jimmy has been playing drums since he was an egg, and spent about five years drumming with skate-punks Suicidal Tendencies, has toured with the great Alice Cooper, and gigged with metal goddess Lita Ford before he joined Megadeth.
Jimmy and I talked all about the recording of Megadeth's upcoming new record, a return to metal power called The World Needs a Hero and he gave me his own version of what goes on behind the music of Megadeth.

MEGADETH BRINGS ON NEW DRUMMER, JIMMY DEGRASSO New York - July 9, 1998 • Multi-platinum hard rock act Megadeth, announced today that they have decided to replace drummer, Nick Menza with Jimmy DeGrasso.
We came to that conclusion after Jimmy stepped in mid-June to cover concert dates for Nick, who had taken a leave of absence to have a benign (non-cancerous) cyst removed from his knee.
Menza had been with the band since 1989, performing on the last 4 Megadeth releases (Capitol); Cryptic Writings, Youthanasia, Countdown to Extinction, and Rust in Peace.

Of course, Nick Menza (d) and Marty Friedman (g) are gone so I was EXTREMELY surprised to hear the outstanding quality of the music spewing forth from Jimmy and Al.
Although they've been touring quite a bit recently, so it shouldn't be that much of a surprise but after hearing other replacements not living up to past members, it was a pleasure to hear Jimmy and Al perform with such professionalism.
Dave's voice is mostly a hit affair but there are a couple of mistakes, in particular when he needs to get "high" like on "Train Of Consequences," "Mechanix," and "Reckoning Day." But it's a live album so it doesn't affect it that much.

Of all the glam/pop-metal bands that crawled out of hair salons coast to coast during the mid- to late '80s, one of the more talented acts was New York's White Lion, led by singer Mike Tramp (originally from Denmark) and guitarist Vito Bratta.
To add insult to injury, both LoMenzo and d'Angelo left the band shortly thereafter, replaced with newcomers Tommy "T-Bone" Caradonna on bass and future Megadeth member Jimmy DeGrasso on drums.
But before the new lineup could record, Tramp and Bratta came to the realization that their best days were behind them and quietly laid White Lion to rest.

But a year later, Dave was back, his injury cured thanks to physical therapy, and Megadeth was back in business.
With his relationship with longtime bassist Dave Ellefson strained, Mustaine set about finding a new lineup to record with, eventually hooking up with new recruits Jimmy Sloas and Vinnie Colaiuta, along with a surprise performance from none other than early Megadeth guitarist Chris Poland.
With this lineup, Megadeth recorded and released The System Has Failed, an album that predictably has generated all sorts of wide-ranging opinions, though Mustaine has clearly opted for at least a partial return to the glory days of mid-career Megadeth rather than the more experimental sounds of the last couple of albums.

For long, Pitrelli has been one of the most underrated guitar players and it's great to see him have an avenue that allows his talent to shine.
New drummer Jimmy DeGrasso also shines, the highlight for his drumming being the title trac,k where he forms quite a tandem with bassist Dave Ellefson, who is one of the premier metal bassists.
Dave Mustaine keeps getting better as a songwriter, guitarist, singer, and as a harbinger of sarcasm, as you'll see in his lyrics.
