James Finlayson - Mr. Double Take
Finlayson's work with Laurel and Hardy is clearly among his best.
Whether he was a bystander or a villain, Finlayson's performance was always pivotal to the film.
Jimmy Finlayson is best known for his "double take and fade away." This is how he described his trademark routine, in which he performed an exaggerated double take followed by a one-eyed stare, in response to doubt or disbelief.

James Finlayson - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
James Finlayson (1771-1852) was a Scottish Quaker who, in effect, took the Industrial Revolution to Tampere, Finland.
James Finlayson was born 1771 in Glasgow, Scotland and became a self-trained engineer.
The next year Finlayson received a permission from a Finnish senate to build a factory in Tampere using the water power from the Tammerkoski river, again with the backing of the tsar.

Born in Larbert in 1887, Finlayson turned his back on the chance of working alongside his father in an iron foundry, and was training for a career in business when he was introduced to John Clyde, a noted Scottish actor of the time.
Finlayson was certainly very capable, and very funny, but as a solo name never quite caught on with the movie public.

 Barnes & Noble.com - Biography
In 1923, Finlayson moved to Hal Roach, where he would spend the next 17 years as both a star comic and (more successfully) a supporting player.
While some of Finlayson's feature-film roles were sizeable, notably his assignments in Dawn Patrol (1930) and All Over Town (1937), he was most often seen in unbilled bits, sometimes (as in the 1938 Astaire-Rogers vehicle Carefree) minus his trademarked paintbrush moustache.
Because of his long associations with Sennett and Roach, James Finlayson was frequently called upon to appear in nostalgic recreations of Hollywood's silent era, notably Hollywood Cavalcade (1939) and The Perils of Pauline (1947).

In Love 'em and Weep, Jimmy Finlayson stars as Titus Tillsbury, a successful businessman who is visited by a flmailing old flame, played with fiery verve by none other than Mae Busch, who repeats her role in the remake.
The slightly dumb business associate is played by Stan Laurel in both films, and, since he doesn't seem to be the sharpest pencil in the box, he succeeds in bringing disaster upon his hapless employer with hilarious results.
Another point of interest is the casting of the ubiquitous Charlie Hall in the silent version (appearing with Stan and Baba for the first time) as Finlayson's butler, a role than Fin proved that he was much better suited for in the remake, where he exhibited exaggerated reaction shots as only Fin could deliver.
