::Bass Players, Jimmy Garrison - jayhungerford.com ::(Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
Garrison is best known as bassist for one of the most important jazz groups, John Coltrane's classic quartet with drummer Elvin Jones and pianist McCoy Tyner.
Garrison's work with Coleman is especially noteworthy; his earthy, hard-swinging approach contrasted greatly with the work of the saxophonist's other, more finesse-oriented bassists like David Izenson or Scott LaFaro.
Garrison came of age in the midst of a thriving Philadelphia jazz scene that included Tyner, fellow bassists Reggie Workman and Henry Grimes, and trumpeter Lee Morgan.
JimmyGarrison is a Native Texan, born and reared in the country 50 miles south of Dallas.
In 2000, Jimmy formed a team with David Welch (the two were affiliated both through their profession and church membership) to expand on his previous success in aviation sales, the idea to expand into other lines of aircraft.
Jimmy is passionate about baseball and spends vacation time taking his family to stadiums around the country, regardless of who is playing (Fenway in Boston takes the honor as his favorite).
The lithe tunefulness that marks the saxophonist's earlier playing is augmented by a more pronounced physicality that pushes the blues aspect to the fore; this due in no small part to Garrison and Jones' focused intensity, which drives Coleman harder than he's ever been driven.
Garrison also taught occasionally; William Parker, one of the most highly regarded bassists of the late '90s and early 2000s, was his student.

Matthew Garrison was born June 2, 1970 in New York.
After the death of his father JimmyGarrison (John Coltrane's bassist), his family relocated to Rome, Italy where he began to study piano and bass guitar.
Garrison has done such a great job of getting his head around home recording technology that doing it becomes a much smaller story than the music itself, which is smart, exciting, innovative, and exquisitely performed.
Garrison’s decision is one influenced by his upbringing.
As the son of legendary Coltrane bassist JimmyGarrison and renowned dancer and choreographer Roberta Escamilla Garrison, the younger Garrison was infused with the wisdom and genetics of parents at the top of their art forms.
The disc finds Garrison upfront most of the time, with his supple, virtuoso basswork serving multiple roles from melody to rhythm to chordal textures.
Compelling that Garrison's father played acoustic bass on what are indisputably jazz's greatest recordings - now comes Matthew demonstrating nothing less than he's the world's greatest electric bass guitarist (reality check: if there are other guys capable of playing this stuff so absolutely freakishly, none are demonstrating it on recordings).
Matts father, JimmyGarrison was the backbone to Coltrane's band for many years.
His DNA is loaded with gifts from his father, the late JimmyGarrison, legendary bassist who brought time and space to the music of John Coltrane, Ornette Coleman and other jazz luminaries.

Of course, it's with Coltrane that Garrison did his most enduring work.
Although Garrison could be a compelling soloist when the occasion presented itself (witness his work on A Love Supreme), he didn't need the spotlight to be effective.
