Giuffre also began to explore the world of composition, writing both film scores (Music Man) and neo-classical third-stream pieces, such as "Pharoah" and "Suspensions", both recorded by Gunther Schuller.
In 1990, Giuffre, his frail appearance proving deceptive, was in fine musical form at the South Bank Jazz Festival in Grimsby, England, where he premiered a new work, "Timeless", commissioned by the festival organizers.
Giuffre's playing of many of the lesser-known members of the saxophone family, and especially the bass clarinet (The Jimmy Giuffre Clarinet), have helped to give his work unusual and frequently sombre shadings.

Hall was the perfect choice to complement Giuffre’s style, since he has also made a career out of a unique soft and gentle sound.
Giuffre accents the lower registers of both his clarinet and sax here, which together with the low tones of both Hall and Brown results in some sexy, almost suggestive moods.
Giuffre composed six of the nine tunes and the trio dug into all of them spontaneously in the studio.

Jimmy Giuffre seems to have become an extremely overlooked and unfortunately forgotten master within his genre.
Giuffre, Hall and Pena have a simpatico that is almost mystical.
Giuffre's tone on all the horns is richly textured, and Pena's bass lines perfectly punctuate the unique melodies Giuffre creates in the playbook, but it is Hall's guitar work that really makes the proceedings come alive.

 JIMMY GIUFFRE
One is that Jimmy Giuffre was an important and innovative jazz musician and composer, and this collection contains at least 90% of his best and most important recordings -- only one single album of which has been available previously on CD (THE JIMMY GIUFFRE 3, on Atlantic).
Giuffre played clarinet on that piece -- an instrument which he had only recently picked up, and on which he felt comfortable (in control) only in its lower register.
The first was not unique to Giuffre: it was the classical-training-inspired use of counterpoint and fugal devices, taken straight from Baroque music.

 Ink 19 :: Jimmy Giuffre
Giuffre tends to go for a relaxed, angular form of improvisation.
"Giuffre," says Penguin, "often sounds as if he is in a world of his own, intensely focused, totally aware, but communicating ideas for which there was no ready-made language or critical rhetoric." Most people can only take so much of this stuff, because it abandons the whole notion of improvising over a rhythmic foundation.
The downside of such an approach is that it leaves no time signature or other reference point for the listener; the upside is that said absence creates a vortex of expectation which allows you to concentrate on the music, rather than trying to anticipate its direction.

This CD is similar to the Atlantic release "Jimmy Giuffre 3", except for the last 4 tracks, and it's missing the fabulous rendition of the Dubin/Warren "Forty-second Street", which was a "bonus track" on "3".
Why Giuffre didn't receive the fame of some of his contemporaries is a mystery to me. His genius was extraordinary, but perhaps this quiet Texan was too quiet in personality to catch the media's attention...or perhaps, that's the way he wanted it.
The potential buyer should be aware that this CD has been previously released as "The Jimmy Giuffre 3" on Atlantic.

Conversations with a Goose (may 1996) reunited him with Bley and Swallow.

Originally released on Verve in 1959, Giuffre's work (clarinet/sax) from this time is known for his lyrical tone and intimate chamber-jazz settings.
Giuffre switches between clarinet, alto and baritone sax on this album; all the while being backed by Jim Hall on guitar and bass god Ray Brown.
This recording was recorded spontaneously in the studio: six of the nine compositions were contributed by Giuffre, and one by Jim Hall, leaving the light and airy "Mack The Knife", and the toned down "Come Rain Or Come Shine", both of which have taken on evergreen status in the history of jazz.

 Jimmy Giuffre
Giuffre has given us many examples of his playful way with fugues and rondos and, at least to my ear, always has managed to keep the music sounding fresh, even though a great deal of it is hung upon traditional architecture.
That achievement is fascinating, because now, in his 80th year, a backward glance over his career as a clarinetist, saxophonist and flautist reveals much to be admired.
But his ideas always have had a quiet intelligence about them, that gives Giuffre's work the character of the advanced creative child in nursery school who prefers the quiet corner alone so that he can construct a labyrinth with his Legos while the other kids smudge their faces with finger paint.

Giuffre's solo is a contrapuntal arpeggio study that alternating mode and interval along with Swallow, coloring in open the chords of Bley with stutters and long runs up and down the horn both in and out of scalar logic.
Bley's established 6/8 swings over to Swallow and allows Giuffre his 18/8 solo in arpeggiated flurries and a timbral twist that carries the tone of the upper register near the middle register of a soprano saxophone.
Bley's 12-tone influences are present too, with striking work in the middle register with the right hand; trills and eighth note runs alternate but never before the rest of the notes in the scale are played.

One of the truly underrated jazz musicians in the modern idiom, Jimmy Giuffre occupies an important position as an innovative and experimental composer, to be sure, but he is, above all, a tremendously soulful performer.
While this `50s album may be said to adumbrate Giuffre's monumental "folk-jazz" compositions or the slightly later "The Jimmy Giuffre Three," it stands on its own in terms of its unique contribution in the history of jazz clarinet playing.
Almost a half century ago, Giuffre opted for "soft jazz" (no relation to the ersatz "smooth jazz" of today!), which on this disc is as powerful and moving as any jazz you'll ever hear.

Multi-instrumentalist Jimmy Giuffre (b.1921 in Dallas, Texas) is an eclectic musician who has always gone his own way, quitely blazing new trails in jazz.
His music gradually changed from "blues-based folk jazz" (his term) to a new, quiet free jazz with a new Jimmy Giuffre 3 (again drumless, with pianist Paul Bley and bassist Steve Shallow).
His famed trio with Bley and Swallow (on electric bass this time around) reunited in 1993 and is heard on his newly released Soul Note album, which find Giuffre sticking to clarinet and soprano sax.

His career winds from the 1940s to ‘01 and his music never stood still, Jimmy Giuffre remains one of the most interesting and underrated jazz musician/composers around.
He’s got many winds in his arsenal, but here he concentrates solely on the titular instrument in solo, duo, trio and mini-big band contexts.
J.G.’s clarinet is warmly resonant — concentrating on the lower registers it sometimes sounds a bit like a baritone sax or an oboe — which, despite the “soft” (his word, not mine) nature of these performances, is a commanding presence.
