Jimmy Rushing - Music Downloads - Online
Rushing achieved his greatest fame in front of the Count Basie band from 1935 to 1950, yet unlike many band singers closely associated with one organization, he was able to carry on afterwards with a series of solo recordings that further enhanced his reputation as a first-class jazz singer.
The unquenchably swinging Basie rhythm section was a perfect match for Rushing, making their earliest showing together on a 1936 recording of "Boogie Woogie" that stamped not only Rushing's presence onto the national scene but also that of Lester Young.
Rushing's recordings with Basie are scattered liberally throughout several reissues on Decca, Columbia and RCA.

Jimmy Rushing's first two Columbia Records albums, recorded in 1955 and 1956 and originally released in 1956 and 1957, both have concepts behind them.
The plot is silly, but it's just an excuse to have Rushing, sometimes joined by the pleasant alto of Moore, fronting Clayton's Count Basie-style orchestra on some old favorites.
Rushing, in his early fifties, may not have the voice he did when he was with Basie, but his performances are spirited and his first-ever piano accompaniment on his own "Tricks Ain't Walkin' No More" is a delight.

Every Day finds sixty-something Rushing backed by a septet of jazzers (including Clark Terry, Grady Tate, Dicky Wells and Hank Jones on organ rather than piano) playing Oliver Nelson arrangements, the whole thing held together by the blues form itself.
Rushing is good enough but rarely rises beyond hitting the marks.
Admittedly there's always a certain detachment in so-called urban blues, a sort of irony at singing that every single day I've got the blues that's noticably different from the streak of gallows humor that runs through the Delta or the equal-roads approach of songsters like Leadbelly.

 Jimmy Rushing | Rushing Lullabies
By the time the 1958 and 1959 sides heard on this reissue (which combines the LPs Rushing Lullabies and Little Jimmy Rushing And The Big Brass on a single CD) were recorded, Rushing had been on his own for eight and nine years—and the Rushing influenced Williams was wailing away for The Count.
This material (which finds Rushing joined by both a big band and small groups) is full of the type of unpretentious blues shouting he was known for, but interpretations of “I Cried For You,” “Deed I Do” and “Russian Lullaby” remind us that he was equally impressive when it came to standards.
Rushing was 54 and 55 when these recordings were made, and it's clear that he was still in his prime.
