  Jimmy Sangster: Man of Horror
Jimmy Sangster began his film career as third assistant director at Hammer after he left the RAF in the 1940s.
Jimmy Sangster’s attitude is “write it and deliver it because everyone is going to mess with it.“ A script can go through 17 different departments, other writers, and be changed by the actors and/or the director.
Jimmy Sangster said he viewed it recently and he thought that it would be really good if it was re-made today with modern-day special effects.

Jimmy Challoner was quite young, and very much in love; so much in love that as yet he had not penetrated the rouge and grease-paint of life and discovered the very ordinary material that lies beneath it.
Jimmy had called her a child; but he had not said how sweet a child she was, he thought, as his eyes rested on her dainty profile and parted lips.
Sangster was right when he had called her "such a child." She looked very young as she stood there in the afternoon sunshine, in her fl frock, and with her white flowers clasped nervously in both hands.

Sangster Introduction   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
Jimmy Sangster, the man often credited with starting the "Hammer Horror" era with his superb scripts, has kindly agreed to grant the Hammer Graveyard an interview.
Sangster moved briefly into direction with the disastrous The Horror of Frankenstein (1970), Hammer's leaden attempt to redo the Frankenstein story with Ralph Bates taking over from Peter Cushing.
Sangster spent much of the 70s working as a writer-producer for American television where he was associated with projects by John Llewellyn Moxey (A Taste of Evil, 1971) and Gordon Hessler (Scream Pretty Peggy, 1973).

BBC - h2g2 - The Man From Hammer [Part One]
Though Jimmy Sangster has done other things since his involvement in the British horror movies making business, he is still continually remembered as one of the men (if not the man) behind the best horror movies made by the famous Hammer Studios.
The Curse of Frankenstein (1957): Script by Jimmy Sangster [from the novel by Mary Shelley], directed by Terence Fisher and starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Hazel Court and Robert Urquhart.
The Mummy (1959): Script by Jimmy Sangster [from the original screenplay by John L Balderston], directed by Terence Fisher and starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee and Yvonne Furneaux.

dOc DVD Review: Horror of Frankenstein (1970) - Printable
The commentary by jack-of-all-trades Jimmy Sangster (who also wrote Curse of Frankenstein, Horror of Dracula and The Mummy to launch Hammer's horror empire) is somewhat disappointing.
A recent 14m:39s interview with her for this disc is a highlight, and it's at least as informative as Sangster's entire commentary.
As Sangster acknowledges in the commentary, he was wearing too many hats and didn't have enough people to tell him when he was going wrong, and the self-indulgent aspects of the movie bear out this observation.

The script by Tudor Gates contains a few fresh twists, Jimmy Sangster's direction is competent, the women, especially Yutte Stensgaard as Mircalla, are gorgeous, and Ralph Bates is excellent in a difficult role (originally intended for Peter Cushing).
Directed Jimmy Sangster, known for his excellent writing work on such films like X the Unknown (1956), The Curse of Frankenstein (1957), and Dracula (1958), the film stars Ralph Bates (Dr. Jekyll and Sister Hyde), Michael Johnson (Anne of the Thousand Days), and Yutte Stensgaard (Scream and Scream Again), in her last silver screen appearance.
Certainly Sangster's direction is leaden and the cast are markedly lacklustre, with Mike Raven awkwardly moulded to the look and persona of Christopher Lee -- indeed, there are even one or two lazy stock-shots from Lee's earlier Dracula appearances -- but he is utterly lacking in Lee's magnetism and acting ability.
