Sirrel joined Aldershot in 1954 as player and it was there that he began a career as a coach.

When Jimmy Sirrel managed the team to three promotions from the 4th, 3rd and 2nd divisions over the periods 1970-1981, it was with the same chairman (Jack Dunnett), same captain (Don Masson) and same trainer (Jack Wheeler).
It was sung by Magpies supporter and local entertainer Jimmy Willan and gained some national fame when Noel Edmonds named the song as the worst pop song of all time on his Radio One programme.

Sirrel quickly lets an injured youngster know he is not in for an easy time: "They don't know what a bad ankle is. Jesus, when you can't get the bellbottom trousers on because it's the size of a f****** beach ball, that's a bad ankle."
The undoubted star of the book is Notts County manager Jimmy Sirrel whose coaching methods and personal habits are strictly old school, even licking the tops of ketchup bottles in restaurants.
During a prematch meal prior to a match at Huddersfield, he horrifies a waitress by licking the neck of a tomato ketchup bottle clean of its sauce — before replacing the top; this idiosyncrasy is repeated in hundreds of eateries up and down the country while the Notts' players muffled their giggles.

Sirrel’s response was designed to blow the questioner out of his Y-fronts.
The trouble with Sirrel, however, was not the possibility that his reaction to insult was occasionally disprop- ortionate, nor was it the probability that he could rip you to pieces both on and off the pitch.
It was the certainty that he was some way from being the prettiest picture in the art gallery!

The first thing that comes to mind when thinking about Notts County is that they are Nottingham’s second, and smaller club, and the same goes for their ground, but that would be doing it a disservice as it really is a great ground, and quite big as well, having a capacity of just over 20,000.
Its better than a lot of Championship grounds, even a couple of Premier League ones with two impressive side stands, with a nice, traditional looking gable on top of the Jimmy Sirrel Stand.
The one end, the Kop Stand is huge and about twice the size of the opposite end, the Family Stand, which slightly lets the ground down, especially with a supporting pillar right in the middle of it.
