Webb has clearly developed a sense of humor about this once deadly earnest song, which is both his biggest hit (Richard Harris's version reached number two on Billboard's singles chart in 1968, and Donna Summer's rendition got to number one in 1978) and one of the most loathed songs in pop history.

The Supremes Produced and Arranged by Jimmy Webb - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Supremes Produced and Arranged by Jimmy Webb is a 1972 album released by The Supremes on the Motown label.
The album was the only Supremes LP produced (and chiefly written) by a non-Motown producer, successful songwriter and producer Jimmy Webb, and was the last album to feature early-1970s Supremes lead singer Jean Terrell.
The Supremes Produced and Arranged by Jimmy Webb marked a departure from the girl-group formula the Suprems had relied upon over the past decade, and moved the group out of its soul/RandB niche and into a rock/pop style masterminded by Jimmy Webb.

Similarly, most would agree that the songs from his most recent album aren't quite to the standard of his golden years of the late 1960s to mid-'70s, and that front-loading the set with them can feel like a frustrating delay of audience gratification.
But first we must remember that, like one of Webb's contemporaries, Burt Bacharach, there is just no way to put in all of the "essential" songs unless you are planning a weekend-long event.

While his 1970 debut, Words And Music, was tailored to the rock audience, Webb subsequently re-consolidated his orchestral gains, culminating in the back-to-back extravagance of Land's End (1974) and El Mirage (1977), the latter produced by George Martin.
Webb consistently impressed critics but sold few records.
